A man has been arrested after another man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run in Sydney's west last week.

Zac Andreou, 67, was standing next to his car on Clarence Street in Condell Park just before 4pm on December 28 when he was hit by a van.

Police allege the van did not stop.

Family members rushed to the scene to help him, but he was critically injured and died on the way to hospital.

Police launched an investigation into the death, releasing CCTV footage of a white Toyota HiAce van driving along Clarence Street shortly after the crash.

It's alleged the van was located on Wednesday night at a wrecking yard in Greenacre, after staff recognised it from news reports.

Police seized the vehicle for forensic examination. A photograph showed it had significant damage to its passenger side, including a partially shattered windscreen.

On Thursday, officers arrested a 49-year-old man at his home in Greenacre over the crash.

He was taken to Bankstown Police Station, where police said he was assisting with inquiries on Thursday evening.
