Mosul (/moʊˈsuːl/; Arabic: الموصل – al-Mawṣil (local pronunciation: el-Mōṣul); Syriac: ܢܝܢܘܐ – Nînwe; Kurdish: مووسڵ – Mûsil) is a city of normally about two and a half million people (2014 est.) in northern Iraq, illegally occupied since 10 June 2014 by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Mosul is completely ruled by the Islamic State terror group headquartered in Al-Raqqah, Syria.The legitimate government of Iraq stopped paying salaries soon after the city was overrun by militants. Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Tal Afar
Tal Afar , (Turkish: Telafer) (pronounced /ta.la.fer/), also known as Tal'Afar, Tall Afar, Tell Afar or Tel Afar, is a city and district in northwestern Iraq in the Nineveh Province located approximately 63 km west of Mosul, 52 km east of Sinjar and 200 km north west of Kirkuk.
While no official census data exists, the city which had been assessed to have a population of approximately 200,000, had dropped to 80,000, as of 2007, nearly all of whom are Iraqi Turkmen. In Tal Afar itself, the population is mostly Turkmen, about 75 per cent of whom were Sunni Muslims, while a quarter were Shi’ites. While most residents can speak Arabic, Iraqi Turkmen, a Turkic language, is the most common language used throughout the city. However, in late 2015, The Economist reported that the city is mainly populated by Arabs.
History
10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of the town of Tal Afar are the mounds of Yarim Tepe which yielded remains from the Halafian culture from the Hassuna, Halaf and Ubaid periods, between 7,000 and 4,500 BC.

The Iraqi army has flushed Daesh militants out of Nimrud, recapturing the ancient city from the terror group. In a statement, the army announced that Iraqi forces took full control of the city and raised the national flag above its buildings. Nimrud is located 30 kilometers south of Mosul and is home to the ruins of a three-thousand-year-old Assyrian city. Daesh destroyed historical relicts and monuments in Nimrud after overrunning it two years ago. In another development, troops seized the village of Numaniya on the outskirts of Mosul. Denis Cuspert, aka Deso Dogg, is a German who joined the Islamic State. He's become a household name for many. However, in this war – in which Germany has been directly supplying weapons to the Peschmerga forces since the attacks on Paris and is more than indirectly involved with Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and other Gulf states – hardly anyone is talking about the German civilians in northern Syria that are fighting terror militias.
While the German government sends its Tornado jets to Syria without a mandate under international law, we discovered German civilians, as well as other international volunteers fighting with and assisting Kurdish commandos. With AK-47s in hand, they are trying to halt the advance of the Islamic State and set up their own in its place. They’re trying to promote a societal model in which there’s no death penalty, men and women have equal right, freedom of religion exists. The far-left scene in Germany sees this as the most important leftist political project in the world and has therefore pledged its support.
VICE journalist, Sebastian Weiss, met up with a German ex-soldier and former Foreign Legionnaire, a 19-year-old Canadian fighter, a mother of four from Poland, an ICOR brigade member, German social workers and a 25-year-old from Saarbrücken, who are deployed under the command of the People’s Protection Units, directly on the front and only 50 kilometers from the IS stronghold, Raqqah.
