Eoin Morgan steps up with six needed

With five runs needed to win Eoin Morgan needed to hit Ben Hilfenhaus' last ball for six to hand the Sydney Thunder victory.

Morgan needed five from Ben Hilfenhaus's final delivery to win the game, and crunched the Melbourne Stars quick straight back over the sight screen to send the 20,076 hardy fans at Spotless Stadium into delirium, and keep the Thunder's slim finals chances alive.

He finished with 71 off 50 balls (his last 56 runs came off just 22) in his final innings for Sydney this season, before flying to India where he'll captain England in the forthcoming one-day series between the two nations.

The six-wicket win came at a cost for the Thunder, with West Indian import Andre Russell likely to miss the rest of the tournament after suffering a left hamstring injury.

The West Indian pulled up lame after chasing a ball to the boundary, and required a medicab to to be hauled back around to the changerooms where he took no further part in the game.

Sydney's run chase started promisingly thanks to an opening cameo from Kurtis Patterson who helped himself to 28 runs from 18 balls, but his wicket sparked a mini collapse and things looked dire at 3-43.

Enter Morgan, who eased his way into a brilliant innings, building partnerships with Ben Rohrer and then Pat Cummins to pull off the most remarkable of run chases.

The Thunder still needed 16 off the final over with Cummins also hitting a six before Morgan's last-ball heroics.

Earlier on, Melbourne had made 8-166, thanks largely to Kevin Pietersen's 60 from 37 balls who played no further part in the game after being dismissed to nurse a groin strain.

A score of over 200 beckoned before The Thunder's bowlers tightened up and restricted Melbourne to just 5-19 from their last five overs.

Sydney remains at the foot of the BBL table, but can still mathematically sneak into the finals should they win their last three and other results go their way.
