WA man charged after injured woman found 'trying to wave down drivers'

Police have charged a man who allegedly assaulted a woman who was found injured, distressed and trying to wave down motorists near a freeway entry south of Perth in the early hours of New Year's Day.

A physical altercation allegedly occurred between the woman and a man known her near the cycle path of the Freeway between Namberlup Bridge and Lakes Road sometime before 3am.

Police were called to the scene and located the injured woman who was treated by St John Ambulance crews and taken to Peel Health Campus where she remains in a stable condition.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with acts with intent to cause bodily harm and will appear in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Friday.

Detectives are appealing to the person who rang police to report a male person in boxer shorts walking a dog around the time of the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
