Flood Watch for the Bonaparte Coastal Rivers
Issued at 12:52 pm CST on Thursday 5 January 2017

Monsoonal flow continues in the north, easing as the tropical low over the
Kimberley moves southwestwards away from the Territory. Widespread daily
rainfall totals less than 20 mm have been been recorded in Bonaparte and North
West Coastal Rivers. River levels have risen in the Victoria River in response
to recent rainfall.

Widespread rainfall of 20 mm are forecast across the Bonaparte Coastal Rivers
over the next 24hrs. River levels may remain raised over the next few days in
some catchments which may affect road access at times, particularly in
Bonaparte Coastal Rivers. Some communities may become or remain isolated.

Catchments likely to be remain affected over the next few days include the
Victoria River.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
- Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
- Stop children playing in or near floodwaters
- Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and
shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your
home
- Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be
treated as live
