The Tian Shan (Chinese: 天山; pinyin: Tiānshān; Wade–Giles: T'ien1 Shan1, Old Turkic: 𐰴𐰣 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃, Tenğri tağ, Mongolian: Тэнгэр уул(Tenger uul)), is a large system of mountain ranges located in Central Asia. The highest peak in the Tian Shan is Jengish Chokusu, 7,439 metres (24,406 ft).
The Chinese name for Tian Shan may be derived from the Xiongnu language name Qilian (Tsilien; Chinese: 祁连), which was described by Sima Qian in the Records of the Grand Historian as the homeland of the pre-Xiongnu peoples of the region, the Yuezhi, and has been said to refer to the Tian Shan rather than to the range 1,500 kilometres (930 mi) further east now known by this name. The Tannu-Ola mountains in Tuva (Tuvan: Таңды-Уула) bear the same name ("heaven/celestial mountains" or "god/spirit mountains").
Tian Shan lies to the north and west of the Taklamakan Desert and directly north of the Tarim Basin in the border region of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and northwest China. In the south it links up with the Pamir Mountains and to north and east it meets the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.
The Silk Road or Silk Route is an ancient network of trade routes that were central to cultural interaction through regions of the Asian continent connecting the West and East from China to the Mediterranean Sea.
The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in Chinese silk carried out along its length, beginning during the Han dynasty (207 BCE – 220 CE). The Central Asian sections of the trade routes were expanded around 114 BCE by the Han dynasty, largely through the missions and explorations of Chinese imperial envoy, Zhang Qian. The Chinese took great interest in the safety of their trade products and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.
Trade on the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the civilizations of China, the Indian subcontinent, Persia, Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia, opening long-distance, political and economic relations between the civilizations. Though silk was certainly the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded, and religions, syncretic philosophies, and various technologies, as well as diseases, also travelled along the Silk Routes. In addition to economic trade, the Silk Road served as a means of carrying out cultural trade among the civilizations along its network.

Through the Tian Shan Mountains by Rail. The 470 km. trip from Turfan to Korla, starting in the Gobi region, crossing the eastern Tien Shan and down into the northern Tarim Basin oases. Travel was at time railroad just completed (ca. 1980); much of footage and narrative is a paean to the benefits the railroad would bring to the indigenous peoples. Apart from lots of photos of the steam locomotive passing through sometimes stark landscape, also some good camel shots, since several taken along for the expedition to test how difficult camel travel over the mountain passes would have been for historic Silk Road travelers. Some interesting shots of T'ang era fortifications, especially at Iargo (?). Construction technique not packed earth layering but layering of rounded boulders with reed mats....
We have selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to undergo profound changes within the next few generations. We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve them. The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change. Music on the silkroad, or silk road music: "The Spring on the Tianshan Mountaon" (天山之春), composed (re-arranged) by the renowned pipa master Wang Fandi (王范地) based on one of the famous pieces of Xinjiang uyghur folk music for dance (新疆民歌). Xinjiang (Northwest of China) is located right on the "silk road" (丝绸之路), which played an important role in the commercial and cultural exchanges between the east and the west. The current piece is originally for pipa solo. In this demo video, pipa soloist Liu Fang performed with percussionist Ziya Tabassian (from Persia, now in Montreal), concert live recording. information: http://www.philmultic.com Musique de la route de la soie, de l'ouest de la Chine. Our company organised a hike (informative walking tour) to high-altitude Lake Sary Chelek for 11 representatives of different tourism agencies from Brazil, Spain, Great Britain, Chile and Russia, who, together with our united team, had a nice time of it in the country of turquoise lakes, deep gorges and picturesque mountain passes, away from the civilization, in the very heart of the Sary Chelek Nature Reserve. The expedition participants enjoyed the beauty of primeval nature, admired the simplicity of the local people’s life, participated in various master classes and partook of oriental food prepared by our professional cooks, while our team ensured a stable functioning of the camps. Simple but filled with fairytale landscapes and bright impressions, a mountain tour like this is...
Josh goes off the beaten path in Xinjiang, China on his trip from Urumqi to Korla, exploring the gorgeous (but bumpy!) mountain pass. Read more: http://www.farwestchina.com/2016/05/xinjiang-road-trip-highway-216.html There are a number of ways to get from Urumqi to Korla in China's Xinjiang region. You can fly, take a train...or drive. Over the past few years the government has invested heavily into infrastructure, building smooth highways that go around the TianShan mountains to make the trip between the two cities quick and easy. Before this highway, however, drivers had to take the unpaved Highway 216 which climbs over the TianShan instead of around it. It's a shorter route but it takes longer. Thankfully, the scenery more than makes up for the trouble. Watch as Josh takes us on a dr...

Kyrgyzstan is a highly picturesque country, with about ¾ of its territory being occupied by great mountain systems, the Tien Shan and Pamir-Alay. Many of the country’s most picturesque and original places can only be reached by jeep. This type of vehicle can find a road even where there is actually not any: it can go on dirt, water and rocks and can climb the most breathtaking high-altitude serpentines! http://www.centralasia-travel.com/en

Lipstick with her hair in curls
Bra was showing through her shirt
But I decided not to flirt
You, standing ten feet tall
Sweater you bought from the mall
All you did was watch TV
