Police say they were called to reports of a swimmer in distress about 3pm Wednesday.

The man was swimming about 300 metres east of flags set up by beach lifesavers, Paul Shannon, general manager of Life Saving Victoria said.

Conditions on the day were calm and suitable for swimming, and Mr Shannon said the man had not been caught in a rip.

Mr Shannon reminded swimmers to always swim between the flags, and ensure they were in good health before taking the plunge.
