New Year Cheer
Mosul, Iraq—Internally displaced children cheer during a New Year's celebration at the Hassan Sham camp 20 miles east of Mosul on December 31. The same day, twin blasts killed at least 28 in al-Sinak market in a largely Shia area of Baghdad. The battle for the last Islamic State (ISIS) stronghold in Mosul has intensified as the jihadist group continues to target Shia neighborhoods in the country. Mosul's recapture by government forces would likely spell the end of the jihadist group's self-proclaimed caliphate, though militants would still be able to launch guerilla-style attacks in the country and inspire attacks abroad.
