Bushfire in East Cannington contained and controlled

Arson Squad detectives are investigating the bushfire in East Cannington which damaged property and put lives at risk on Wednesday.

The fire started just before 10am near the intersection of Station Street and Elizabeth Streets.

The cause of the fire is suspicious.

A bushfire advice warning is still in place for people bounded by Station Street, Elizabeth Street, Gerard Street and Campbell Street.

Although there is no immediate danger currently, residents need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.

The fire is contained and under control and Station Street has been re-opened.

Firefighters are patrolling the area for the rest of the evening.

Detectives from the Arson Squad's Strike Force Vulcan are seeking public assistance as they investigate the cause of the blaze.

Police say the fire has damaged sheds, stables and fences in the area. Luckily, no-one was injured.

"The fire is being treated as suspicious and Strike Force Vulcan officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the area around the time of the fire who may have seen any suspicious person, vehicles or activity," police said in a statement.

Callers may remain anonymous if they wish and rewards of up to $50,000 are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
