Pushkar

Pushkar (Hindi: पुष्कर) is a town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northwest of Ajmer at an average elevation of 510 m (1,670 ft) and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage site) for devout Hindus. According to Hindu theology, the pond at the Katas Raj temple Near Choa Saidan Shah in Chakwal District of Pakistan has a theological association with Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sati. The story goes that when Sati died, Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes, in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Katas is derived. It is often called "Tirth Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites – and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists.

Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation.

India

India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Pushkar Fair

The Pushkar Fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) or locally Pushkar ka Mela is an annual five-day camel and livestock fair held in the town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs. Apart from the buying and selling of livestock, it has become an important tourist attraction. Competitions such as the "matka phod", "longest moustache", and "bridal competition" are the main draws for this fair which attracts thousands of tourists. In recent years the fair has also included an exhibition cricket match between the local Pushkar club and a team of random foreign tourists. The Imperial Gazetteer of India mentions an attendance of 100,000 pilgrims in early 1900s.

Thousands of people go to the banks of the Pushkar Lake where the fair takes place. Men buy and sell their livestock, which includes camels, cows, sheep and goats. The women go to the stalls, full of bracelets, clothes, textiles and fabrics. A camel race starts off the festival, with music, songs and exhibitions to follow. Between these events, the most waited for is the test of how the camel is able to bring the items. In order to demonstrate, the men go up on the group of camels one after another.

Pushkar Lake

Pushkar Lake or Pushkar Sarovar (Sanskrit: पुष्कर-सरोवर) is located in the town of Pushkar in Ajmer district of the Rajasthan state of western India. Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake of the Hindus. The Hindu scriptures describe as it as "Tirtha-Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites related to a water-body and relate it to the mythology of the creator-god Brahma, whose most prominent temple stands in Pushkar. The Pushkar Lake finds mention on coins as early as the 4th century BC.

Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats (a series of steps leading to the lake), where pilgrims throng in large numbers to take a sacred bath, especially around Kartik Poornima (October–November) when the Pushkar Fair is held. A dip in the sacred lake is believed to cleanse sins and cure skin diseases. Over 500 Hindu temples are situated around the lake precincts.

Tourism and deforestation in the surroundings have taken a heavy toll on the lake, adversely affecting its water quality, reducing the water levels and destroying the fish population. As part of conservation measures, the government is undertaking de-silting, de-weeding, water treatment, and afforestation as well as mass awareness programme.

Every year the fair is celebrated with great zeal by the people of Rajasthan. Owners of animals buy baubles to decorate their cattle to attract buyers. People from all over India come to Pushkar to buy and sell high breed animal like camels and horses. One of the major attractions of this fair is the Marwari horse. The Marwari horse is considered to be one of the finest horse breeds of India. It is a rare breed of horse from the Marwar region or the area around Jodhpur. This breed is known for its inward-turning ear tips; it comes in all equine colours, although Marwaris with pinto patterns tend to be the most popular with buyers and breeders. The Pushkar fair is the world's largest camel fair, and apart from buying and selling of livestock it has become an important tourist attraction. Its highlights have eventually become traditional game competitions like Kabaddi, Seven stones, Pitthu etc. Tourists are encouraged to be a part of these games and are seen enjoying such indeginous sports. Another important factor of the fair that attracts travellers is the camel competition. Owners decorate their camels with colourful ropes, bells and other decorative items trying making their camels look the most attractive and eye-catching as the best looking camel wins the grand prize. Camel and horse dances are also very popular during the Pushkar fair. Pushkar is not only famous for its animal trade, it is also known for its traditional cuisine. The cuisine of Rajasthan is very rich and has a unique flavour. The best known Rajasthani food is the combination of dal, bati and churma as well as the Missi roti. Being a religious destination, one may find only vegetarian dishes served at this fair. All the dishes are cooked in pure desi ghee or clarified butter and have mouth –watering spicy flavours. Local acrobats are found all over at this fair. One can see a nine year old girl displaying her prowess at tight-rope walking, whilst balancing earthen pots on her head. Nearby is a five year old girl balancing on a bicycle wheel rim with a bamboo pole and moving along a rope. The Pushkar mela or fair is a religious event as well. It is the only place where Lord Bhrama, of the Hindu holy trinity, is worshipped. It is believed that the holy Pushkar Lake has unique powers to heal all kinds diseases and that it is also capable of washing away ones sins. Being a spiritual destination, Pushkar is home to numerous small and big temples, all of which are a must-see. The Pushkar fair is an experience that stays on in the memories of the travellers and leaves them craving to return here. Tourists can buy some traditional ornaments, beads, necklaces and other handicrafts as souviniers to take back from Pushkar. The great mela of Pushkar is a priceless treat for those who wish to see the true colours of Rajasthan. Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation. Pushkar has many temples. Most of the temples are not very old because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area. Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt. The most famous among all is the Brahma Temple built during the 14th century CE. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world. Other temples of Brahma include Bithoor in Uttar Pradesh, India; Khedbrahma in Gujarat, India; village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district in Rajasthan; Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Srirangam, Tamil Nadu; Carambolim near Valpoi in Goa, Mother Temple of Besakih in Bali, Indonesia; and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. Pushkar is also famous for its annual fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) held in November. https://youtu.be/I061bGbx24A Pushkar rajasthan

According to the Hindu scripture Padma Purana, Brahma saw the demon Vajranabha (Vajranash in another version) trying to kill his children and harassing people. He immediately slew the demon with his weapon, the lotus-flower. In this process, the lotus petals fell on the ground at three places, creating three lakes: the Pushkar Lake or Jyeshta Pushkar (greatest or first Pushkar), the Madya Pushkar (middle Pushkar) Lake, and Kanishta Pushkar (lowest or youngest Pushkar) lake. When Brahma came down to the earth, he named the place where the flower ("pushpa") fell from Brahma's hand ("kar") as "Pushkar". Brahma then decided to perform a yajna (fire-sacrifice) at the main Pushkar Lake. To perform his yajna peacefully without being attacked by the demons, he created the hills around the Pushkar...

The Dargāh Sharīf of Khwāja Muinuddīn Chishti is situated at the foot of the Tārāgaṛh hill, and consists of several white marble buildings arranged around two courtyards, including a massive gate donated by the Nizām of Hyderabad and the Akbari Mosque, built by the Mughal emperor Shāh Jahān. To perform his yajna peacefully without being attacked by the demons, he created the hills around the Pushkar — Ratnagiri in the south, Nilgiri in the north, Sanchoora in the west and Suryagiri in the east — and positioned gods there to protect the yajna performance. However, while performing the yajna, his wife Savitri (or Sarasvati in some versions) could not be present at the designated time to perform the essential part of the yajna as she was waiting for her companion goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati and Indrani. So Brahma married Gurjar girl, Gayatri and completed the yajna with his new consort sitting beside him, holding the pot of amrita (elixir of life) on her head and giving ahuti (offering to the sacrificial fire). When Savitri finally arrived at the venue she found Gayatri sitting next to Brahma which was her rightful place. Agitated, she cursed Brahma that he would be never worshipped, but then reduced the curse permitting his worship in Pushkar. Savitri also cursed Indra to be easily defeated in battles, Vishnu to suffer the separation from his wife as a human, the fire-god Agni who was offered the yajna to be all-devouring and the priests officiating the yajna to be poor. Endowed by the powers of yajna, Gayatri diluted Savitri's curse, blessing Pushkar to be the king of pilgrimages, Indra would always retain his heaven, Vishnu would be born as the human Rama and finally unite with his consort and the priests would become scholars and be venerated. Thus, the Pushkar temple is regarded the only temple dedicated to Brahma.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Savitri, thereafter, moved into the Ratnagiri hill and became a part of it by emerging as a spring known as the Savitri Jharna (stream); a temple in her honour exists here.[6]

Pushkar Having spent the major part of my youth in DELHI I still cannot find words to describe this town. You have to come here and experience it. Just 11 Km from Ajmer and surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the other, an oasis in inhospitable surrounding is an absolute must-see in Rajasthan. Pushkar, is a Hindu pilgrim town and has one of the five dhams or pilgrimages that are held in high esteem by Hindus. The others are Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram, and Dwarka. Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed many of the temples here during his progroms on the Hindus. THE PUSHKAR LAKE: (Tirtharaj, which means the Royal Pilgrimage) It is revered as one the most sacred lakes among the Hindus. The belief is that; a dip in this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik month), and worship at the Brahma temple cleanses the soul and ensures salvation. The famed waters of the Pushkar Lake are said to wash away the sins of a lifetime. The mystical water is also believed to cure skin diseases. There are many temples located around the lake that add to the charm and mystique of this sacred town. JAGATPITA SHRI BRAHMA MANDIR: (Lord of the Universe) This is the only Temple dedicated to Lord Bhrama in World. The temple stands on a high plinth with a striking red sandstone spire (shiker), marble steps leading up to it the temple. Just above the main gateway there is an image of a goose, the symbol of Brahma. Within the temple is a silver turtle set on the floor facing the Sanctum Sanctorum or Girbha-griha. All around this turtle on the Marble floor there are inset hundreds of silver coins. Coins engraved with donor's names are also embedded into the walls. Peacocks adorn most of walls of the temple; Hindus believed it to be the vehicle of lord Brahma's consort Saraswati (the goddess of learning). SAVITRI TEMPLE: This very colourful temple is located behind the Brahma Temple on a hilltop. The temple is dedicated to the first consort of lord Brahma; it offers breathtaking views of the Pushkar Lake in the morning and is well worth the uphill trek. VARAH TEMPLE: The huge idol here of Varah, the god with the body of a man and the head of the boar is of immense curiosity to the non-Hindu. The deity of this temple offended Emperor Aurangzeb (a pious Muslim) who and had it destroyed. Raja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur reconstructed it in 1727. The temple has an interesting and richly ornamented image house. MAHADEVA TEMPLE: This beautiful temple built in the 19th century has a remarkable feature; a white marble idol of Lord Mahadeva with five faces. The temple itself has elegant ornamentation that is by far the best seen in Pushkar. RAMAVAIKUNTH TEMPLE: Pushkar's more modern and largest with more intricate ornamentation, the Ramavaikunth Temple was built in the 1920's and has beautifully sculpted images of no less than 361 different deities. The ornate outer gopuram over the entrance is said to have been built by a team of masons specially brought here from south India. THE PUSHKAR FAIR: Held in the month of Kartik each year 'The Pushkar Mela' (fair) is the best time to visit. The Mela is a staggering sight, camels, horses, cows, goats, and sheep from all over the desert state are transported here to be traded during this week-long fair. Suddenly the barren plains around Pushkar are awash with a flood of animals and their masters; the desert explodes into a riot of colour. The men in their brightly coloured turbans and the heavily bejeweled women with their vividly hued ghagaras (ankle-length skirts) add to the spectacle. best

Jagatpita Brahma Mandir is a Hindu temple situated at Pushkar in the Indian state of Rajasthan, close to the sacred Pushkar Lake to which its legend has an indelible link. The temple is one of very few existing temples dedicated to the Hindu creator-god Brahma in India and remains the most prominent among them. Although the present temple structure dates to the 14th century, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old.
