Greedy western powers, led by the USA, took advantage of the ‘Arab Spring’ to try and seize Libya’s oil and assets and cynically bombed the benevolent dictator Gaddafi out of power as a ‘humanitarian intervention’ in the name of ‘Parliamentary Democracy’ (which has never worked in a tribal moslem society). 5 years later the horror and suffering goes on and on, amid a search for a new dictator able to channel Libya-s wealth to western corporations.

We do not know how many people have died in Libya as a result of the brutal NATO intervention in 2011. Some sources speak of about thirty thousand dead; Others increase that figure. The Red Cross estimates about 120,000 deaths. But there is no doubt that the war that started NATO has destroyed the country and thrown its six million inhabitants into a sinister nightmare.
Next March marks the sixth anniversary of the start of the massacre: from ships and planes the United States, France and Britain launched a flood of bombs and cruise missiles. They justified war and slaughter with UN Security Council resolution 1973, which spoke only of using the «necessary measures» to protect the civilian population that «was threatened», and that authorized a no-fly zone, but Not the invasion of the country.
According to a recent Amnesty International report, 435,000 people are internally displaced, with more than 100,000 of those residing in makeshift camps.
There was no authorization to initiate a military intervention, much less an attack to overthrow the government of the country. China and Russia, as well as India and Germany, abstained in that vote on the Security Council, and subsequently, in view of the war imposed, both Moscow and Beijing denounced the abusive interpretation by Washington, its European allies and The NATO resolution of the Council.
South Africa, which had also voted in favor of the resolution, later denounced the excessive use of the agreement to force a «regime change and military occupation of the country.»
Such was the hypocrisy in Washington, London and Paris that their planes bombed the civilian population in Benghazi and Misrata, among other Libyan cities, killing hundreds of people, although they allegedly intervened in their defense. Previously, «rebel forces» had been trained by US military instructors and other NATO countries, while provided with sophisticated weapons and information. The US State Department had worked to create a pro-USA National Transitional Council to impose it as a new government after the defeat of Gaddafi.

In fact, prior to the onset of the military aggression, British and US military commands (in operations approved by Cameron and Obama, violating international law) had infiltrated Libya and carried out acts of sabotage and selective assassinations. The Western military went so far as to use clothing similar to the militia of the rebel side, to camouflage their intervention before the international institutions: they were NATO soldiers, but they never recognized their condition, and they trained the rebels and fought with them.

During the summer months of 2011, NATO launched thousands of combat missions, and sent «special operations» commands to reinforce attacks by armed rebels backed by the Western alliance. On 20 October, Gaddafi fled from Sirte, his convoy was attacked by American and French planes, and was finally detained by rebel forces, aided by these «special operations commandos» of the United States. Afterwards, he was murdered in cold blood.
Five days before Gaddafi’s assassination, British Prime Minister Cameron and French President Sarkozy flew to Libya in the rebel-controlled area as US CIA teams worked to locate Gaddafi and assassinate him. His death was celebrated by Obama, Cameron, Sarkozy and Hillary Clinton.
Violating the UN resolution, using war again as an instrument of foreign policy, the United States and its allies achieved their goals. NATO bombings destroyed airports, infrastructure and ports of the country, official centers, barracks, roads, and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee, according to UN estimates, becoming refugees in their own land.
The foreign reserves and resources of the country were intervened (blatantly stolen) by the western governments. Today, the country’s economy is barely a third of what it was before the NATO intervention in 2011. Then, predictably, the ‘battle of flags’ between the different armed groups exploded (as happened in Afghanistan after the triumph of the «the warlords» also supported by the United States);
Chaos came to the country, devastation, fanatical militiamen and armed bandits who seized everything. Libya became a nightmare, where kidnappings, clandestine torture centers, murders, rapes of women, have taken over daily life in hell; food and medicines are lacking, to the point that in many cities, as in Benghazi, people are forced to eat rotten food and rats.

To this landscape of hell, is united the destruction of public centers, squares, parks and places where the population went before the war; to all this is added the theft of property and the public executions and decapitations organized by the jihadist groups, which have become common currency of the new Libya today. Independent sources speak of hundreds of people, perhaps thousands, beheaded by armed detachments of religious militia fanatics.

Salafist groups and jihadists continue to control important areas of the territory, and although Washington attempted to raise a democratic setting in the June 2014 elections on a census of 3.5 million people, only 18% of the population voted. Many cities have become ruined, and antipersonnel mines are a mortal danger to the survivors.
Several hundred armed groups, facing each other, are fighting for control of the territory and wealth of the country, along with mafias who traffic with people, who condemn forced migrants to forced labour, who kill with impunity. Meanwhile two governments and two «parliaments» in Tripoli and in Tobruk (then supported by NATO) attempted to defeat their adversary and obtain external recognition.
To get out of the chaos, (get the oil flowing) Western governments pushed for the so-called «government of national unity», which was created in Morocco in December 2015, chaired by Fayez al-Sarraj, although it still does not establish its authority throughout the country and is even incapable of controlling Tripoli, where there are several dozen armed militias whose agenda focuses on seizing oil for export, extorting the population and migrants and trafficking with people.

In other important Libyan cities, such as Sirte, Misrata and Tobruk, the same thing happens. In turn, General Jalifa Haftar now controls Tobruk, with military and financial aid from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Haftar is a Libyan military man who, after breaking with Gaddafi, was transferred by the CIA to the United States in the 1990s and was later to lead the armed militia that financed the American agency.

To them must be added the forces controlled by Daesh, the self-styled Islamic State, which has important connivances in the monarchies of the Persian Gulf.
In that hellish chaos, Washington continues to send «special operations groups» (such as the one that arrived in December of 2015 to the military base of Al-Watiya, in the district of An Nuqat al Khams, next to the Tunisian border, a command that was Blocked by armed groups and then forced to leave the country), and uses its aviation to bomb militias that are not to its liking, while supporting the government of Fayez al-Sarraj, although they still have the asset of Haftar, an old employee of The CIA.
In practice, the various militias block each other, and the chaos is such that there is no side capable of imposing itself on others. The United States tries to stabilize the situation, through the government of Fayez al-Sarraj, although it would not disdain to support a government of Haftar if it managed to impose itself in the greater part of the country: it wants to have a client government that assures its interests, and the Department Of State is capable of making any bandit government presentable.
Libya the United States its European allies (Britain, France) responsible for the country’s tragedy are interested in different issues: Brussels is trying to contain the arrival of migrants from Libya today, which some sources estimate at 150,000 per year, a matter of particular concern to Germany;
Washington intends to control Daesh (with whom it temporises in Syria, where, in fact, it is seen as an ally in the war to topple the government of Damascus), deactivate the hundreds of militias, and recover oil production. In turn, the UN special envoy for Libya, Martin Kobler, tries, without luck, to mediate in chaos.
In the meantime, television and the big international press ceased long ago to show interest in Libya today, following a script used many times with success. Libya, a failed state with the presence of Daesh (which has just lost Sirte), where all groups and militias commit war crimes in the face of Western indifference, is today a country for which no NATO power is responsible. 
Although a third of the population needs urgent food aid, even if the Libyans have to eat rats and drink pestilential waters, even if they are forced to contemplate constant murders and beheadings, even though life is worthless there, the chancelleries are content that the Libyans have been condemned to live in hell.

Libia, sepultada en el crimen y el silencio

No sabemos cuántas personas han muerto en Libia hoy a consecuencia de la brutal intervención de la OTAN en 2011. Algunas fuentes hablan de unos treinta mil muertos; otras, aumentan esa cifra. Por su parte, la Cruz Roja calcula unos ciento veinte mil muertos, pero no hay duda de que esa guerra que inició la OTAN ha destruido el país y arrojado a sus seis millones de habitantes a una pesadilla siniestra.
En marzo próximo se cumplirán seis años del inicio de la matanza: desde buques y aviones, Estados Unidos, Francia y Gran Bretaña lanzaron un diluvio de bombas y de misiles de crucero. Justificaron la guerra y la matanza con la resolución 1973 del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, que sólo hablaba de utilizar las “medidas necesarias” para proteger a la población civil que “estuviera amenazada”, y que autorizó una zona de exclusión aérea, pero no la invasión del país.
No había autorización alguna para iniciar una intervención militar, ni mucho menos un ataque para derrocar el gobierno del país. China y Rusia, así como la India y Alemania, se abstuvieron en aquella votación del Consejo de Seguridad, y, posteriormente, a la vista de la guerra impuesta, tanto Moscú como Pekín denunciaron la abusiva interpretación que habían hecho Washington, sus aliados europeos y la OTAN de la resolución del Consejo. Sudáfrica, que también había votado a favor de la resolución, denunció después el uso desmesurado del acuerdo para forzar un “cambio de régimen y la ocupación militar del país”.
Fue tal la hipocresía de Washington, Londres y París, que sus aviones llegaron a bombardear a la población civil en Bengasi y Misrata, entre otras ciudades libias, matando a centenares de personas, pese a que supuestamente intervenían en su defensa. Previamente, las “fuerzas rebeldes” fueron entrenadas por instructores militares norteamericanos y de otros países de la OTAN, al tiempo que les facilitaron armamento sofisticado e información, y el Departamento de Estado norteamericano trabajó para crear un Consejo Nacional de Transición para imponerlo como nuevo gobierno tras la derrota de Gadafi.
De hecho, desde antes del inicio de la agresión militar, comandos militares británicos y norteamericanos (en operaciones aprobadas por Cameron y Obama, violando la legalidad internacional) se habían infiltrado en Libia y llevaban a cabo acciones de sabotaje y asesinatos selectivos. Los militares occidentales llegaron al extremo de utilizar vestimenta similar a los milicianos del bando rebelde, para camuflar su intervención ante las instituciones internacionales: eran militares de la OTAN, pero nunca reconocieron su condición, y adiestraron a los rebeldes y lucharon junto a ellos.
Durante los meses del verano de 2011, la OTAN lanzó miles de misiones de combate, y envió comandos de “operaciones especiales” para reforzar los ataques de los rebeldes armados y apoyados por la alianza occidental. El 20 de octubre, sin fuerzas para resistir, Gadafi huyó de Sirte y su convoy fue atacado por aviones norteamericanos y franceses, y, finalmente, fue detenido por fuerzas rebeldes, ayudadas por esos “comandos de operaciones especiales” norteamericanos.
Después, lo asesinaron a sangre fría. Cinco días antes del asesinato de Gadafi, el primer ministro británico, Cameron, y el presidente francés, Sarkozy, volaron a Libia, a la zona controlada por los rebeldes, mientras los equipos de la CIA norteamericana trabajaban para localizar a Gadafi y asesinarlo. Después, estalló la lucha de banderías entre los distintos grupos armados (como ocurrió en Afganistán tras el triunfo de los “señores de la guerra” apoyados también por Estados Unidos); llegó el caos al país, la devastación, los milicianos fanáticos y bandidos armados que se apoderaron de todo. Libia pasó a ser una pesadilla, donde los secuestros, los centros de tortura clandestinos, los asesinatos, las violaciones de mujeres, se han apoderado de la vida cotidiana en el infierno;
y donde faltan hasta alimentos y medicinas, hasta el punto de que en muchas ciudades, como en Bengasi, los habitantes se ven obligados a comer alimentos podridos y ratas.
A ese paisaje del infierno, se une la destrucción de centros públicos, de plazas, parques y lugares donde la población acudía antes de la guerra; se añade el robo de propiedades, los fusilamientos y decapitaciones públicas organizadas por los grupos yihadistas, que han pasado a ser moneda común de la nueva Libia hoy. Fuentes independientes hablan de centenares de personas, tal vez miles, decapitadas por los destacamentos armados de fanáticos milicianos religiosos.
Grupos salafistas y yihadistas siguen controlando importantes áreas del territorio, y, aunque Washington intentó levantar un decorado democrático, en las elecciones de junio de 2014, sobre un censo de tres millones y medio de personas, apenas votó el 18 % de la población. Muchas ciudades han quedado convertidas en ruinas, y las minas antipersona son un peligro mortal para los supervivientes.
En otras importantes ciudades libias, como Sirte, Misrata, Tobruk, ocurre lo mismo. A su vez, el general Jalifa Haftar controla ahora Tobruk, con ayuda militar y financiera de Egipto y Emiratos Árabes Unidos. 
Haftar es un militar libio que, tras romper con Gadafi, fue trasladado por la CIA a Estados Unidos, en los años noventa, para posteriormente, encabezar la milicia armada que financió la agencia norteamericana. A ellos hay que añadir las fuerzas controladas por Daesh, el autodenominado Estado Islámico, que cuenta con importantes connivencias en las monarquías del golfo Pérsico.
En ese caos infernal, Washington sigue enviando “grupos de operaciones especiales” (como el que llegó en diciembre de 2015 a la base militar de Al-Watiya, en el distrito de An Nuqat al Khams, junto a la frontera tunecina, comando que fue bloqueado por grupos armados y obligado después a salir del país), y utiliza su aviación para bombardear a milicias que no son de su agrado, mientras apoya al gobierno de Fayez al-Sarraj, aunque sigue contando con la baza de Haftar, viejo empleado de la CIA.
En la práctica, las distintas milicias se bloquean entre sí, y el caos es tal que no existe un bando capaz de imponerse a los demás. Estados Unidos intenta estabilizar la situación, a través del gobierno de Fayez al-Sarraj, aunque no desdeñaría apoyar a un gobierno de Haftar si consiguiera imponerse en la mayor parte del país: quiere contar con un gobierno cliente que asegure sus intereses, y el Departamento de Estado es capaz de hacer presentable a cualquier gobierno de bandidos.
