Where Sydney's socialites spent their 2017 New Year's Day

If you didn't have a Chanel, Gucci or The Daily Edited on your arm at Catalina's New Year's Day party (the new New Year's Eve soiree) you didn't really fit in.

The exclusive invite-only event at Rose Bay was filled mostly with air-kissing Eastern Suburbs socialites, who splashed out $400 a ticket for an endless supply of Pommery Champagne, Aperol Spritz, espresso martinis, piña coladas and the pièce de résistance - Catalina's eats, including rock oysters, prawns, fresh tuna, tacos and sliders.

Entertainment news highlights

Mariah Carey and Robbie Williams kick off the new year with controversial performances, Will & Grace returns and screen legend Debbie Reynolds is remembered.

Actor Shemar Moore, best known for playing Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds, posed for selfie after selfie with the excited crowd and later in the night, the 46-year-old, draped in a patriotic American flag scarf, joined the DJ for a set.

Upcoming Real Housewives of Sydney star, Nicole O'Neil, also mingled with the designer-clad crowd but managed to escape the photographers, while British DJ and producer Joey Negro played the hits before jetting to Melbourne for a session at Greenfields.

After a day on a boat with friends, James Packer's niece Francesca was hotly tipped to attend the event organised by Catalina restaurateur Michael McMahon's daughter Kate and PR provided by Sweaty Betty's Roxy Jacenko, but the heiress was a no-show.

Over at the more laid-back Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel's Surf Lodge, model Bambi Northwood-Blythe, 25; her husband, sometimes designer, other times DJ, Dan Single, 36; and Byron Bay-born model Jordan Barrett led the charge at the Hamptons tropical-themed party.

A Gucci-clad Northwood-Blythe and Single seemed in flying form with both taking to the decks despite a night of partying on The Island for NYE alongside Vogue Australia's fashion director and Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West's friend, Christine Centenera.

"2017 you treating me real good... DJ'ed like a legend," Northwood-Blythe wrote on Instagram.

However, ladies man Barrett, who was most recently linked with Hailey Baldwin and Scott Disick's ex Megan Blake Irwin, seemed more subdued than usual and took a rest on a sun lounger with the festivities possibly taking its toll.

The sold out event cost between $179 and $239 (depending on when you bought your tickets) and included a cocktail on arrival and complimentary beverages and food between 12pm and 2pm.

Maurice Terzini, who started a New Year's Day party at Icebergs Dining Room and Bar in 2003, hosted retired NRL player Braith Anasta and new girlfriend Rachael Lee and friends at the sold-out event at Bondi Beach.

"It was a quiet New Year's Eve but today is the day to celebrate with the best... love to everyone!! Have great day," he wrote on Instagram under a picture of Lee planting a kiss on his cheek. Anasta split with actor wife Jodi Gordon last year. They have one daughter together, Aleeia, two.

Tickets for Icebergs are arguably the most coveted on NYD, and cost around $500 for a day filled with Maison Perrier-Jouët champagne, live DJS and canapes, but they don't come easy. To be in with a chance, you must register your interest, join a waitlist and hope to be picked.
