Meetings/Streams

Note: All meetings (except observing nights) are held at 7.30pm at Regis Hall, St. Ignatius’ College, Riverview

We are a society based in the northern suburbs of Sydney (NSW, Australia), containing a number of streams to cater for astronomy related interests at all levels.  We have a number of core streams and activities at NSAS and these are listed below. Please visit the site regularly to get updated news on our upcoming events and activities.  Our core streams/activities are:

Monthly Meetings (Third Tuesday of the month)
Once a month (at 7:30pm on the third Tuesday of the month) we meet at Regis Hall in the grounds of St Ignatius’ College, Riverview Street, Riverview (Lane Cove) (click here for a map).  This meeting focuses on the theoretical aspects of astronomy, each month featuring a guest lecturer, and touching on subjects such as cosmology and astrophysics.
New Astronomers Group (Fourth Tuesday of the month)
The New Astronomers Group is a seven month course, held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Regis Hall in the grounds of St Ignatius’ College, Riverview Street, Riverview (Lane Cove) (click here for a map). It’s a great place for people who have recently purchased or plan to purchase a telescope and would like to learn how to use it. The group also caters for those of us who are have had their telescopes for a while and are interested in talks and presentations on the latest updates in astronomy. If you have a problem with your telescope and need advice with it, please contact us beforehand from the menu above and bring your scope along with you on the night. Topics we cover include star-hopping the night sky, learning to use your telescope more effectively, astrophotography and other practical areas of astronomy. See here for details.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Now taking registrations for the 2017 course.
Observation Nights
Observing nights take place at Terrey Hills, usually on the Saturday before and after the New Moon. We start around sunset and continue until everyone has had enough.
You don’t need to have your own telescope to attend viewing nights. The club has its’ own telescope (an 8” Dobsonian) which members can borrow. The observing schedule can be found at https://nsas.org.au/observing/
Each month we hold a visitors night ($5 pp donation, including children) and a members only night. Visitors with telescopes will be permitted only one $5 observing night, after which they must become a member of the Society to continue to enjoy the outstanding facility at Terrey Hills. These visitor nights give you an opportunity to find out more about us. If you would like to join us, please click the Join Link in the menu above. Please note that general meetings are not held during the month of January. However, observing nights are still held.
