Variable Stars Section

This Section assists members in the observation of Variable stars.

Observations are forwarded to the AAVSO and Variable Stars South VSS is a research section of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand Inc.) each month, where the observations form part of an invaluable database available to professional astronomers.

The Section distributes information on program stars (those which are of special interest to professionals) and also provides rapid dissemination of information on targets of opportunity (eg novae). The section is also developing expertise in photometry (both photoelectric and CCD).

Interested members are encouraged to contact the Director, Peter Nelson ( pnelson@dcsi.net.au ) on such things as how to observe variable stars and what stars might be suitable for you to observe.

To begin with, you might like to read the AAVSO manual on observing variable stars. This can be found at http://www.aavso.org/visual-observing-manual
