A mass shooting occurred at a nightclub in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, Turkey on 1 January 2017, killing at least 39 people. The attack occurred at about 01:15 (UTC+3) at the Reina nightclub in Ortaköy, where hundreds of people were celebrating the New Year. At least 69 people were injured.
Attack[edit]
A gunman reportedly wearing a Santa Claus costume opened fire on the nightclub at about 1:15 am. He reportedly carried an AK-47 and entered the nightclub after killing a police officer at the gate.[1][2][3] The attacker reportedly spoke Arabic[4] and is still on the loose.[5]
At the time of the attack, 700–800 people were at the nightclub to celebrate the New Year.[6] At least 39 were killed[7][8][9] (including 16 foreigners)[5] and at least 69 others were injured.[10] Police set up a cordon two miles around the nightclub.[11] A number of people jumped into the Bosphorus to escape the attack; rescue efforts are underway for these people.[12]
Istanbul's governor Vasip Şahin has said the attack was a terrorist attack.[13]
This attack came during a period of heightened security measures in the city, with 17,000 police officers on duty.[14]
