Persian Gulf Or Arabian Gulf? Politicians Play The Name Game
There's no shortage of flash points in the Middle East. U.S. President Donald Trump recently exposed the gulf in that region over what to call the Gulf.
Donald Trump’s use of one name instead of the other reignited a decades-long debate about what it should be called. “It harasses American ships and threatens freedom of navigation in the Arabian Gulf and in the Red Sea.” Iranians swamped Trump with 3.97 million responses on Instagram and Twitter over the perceived slight. And 3 days later, an exhibition ripping Trump for his comments opened in Tehran under the title "Persian Gulf Forever" So who’s right?

Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf? The Middle-East's most dangerous naming dispute
The waters between Iran and the Arabian peninsula are among the most important and valuable waterways in the world. And for decades now, Iran and the Arab Gulf States (mainly Saudi-Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates) have struggled to obtain dominance in the region.
The dispute not only revolves around the material and strategic value of the waters, but also its name itself: Is it the Persian Gulf, or the Arabian Gulf? This question has become a heated discussion in the region, with many Arab states favouring the term ‘Arabian Gulf’ while Iran, and most of the rest of the world, consider the term ‘Persian Gulf’ as the correct one.

Why the US and Iran are fighting over this tiny waterway
The Strait of Hormuz, “the jugular of the global economy," has become a useful bargaining chip for Iran.
Become a Video Lab member! http://bit.ly/video-lab
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway that lies between Iran and Oman. This 21 mile-wide passage supports 20% of the world’s oil supply. A closure of this waterway could send the global economy into a tailspin.
In recent months, several oil tankers have been seized, attacked and harassed. These oil tankers — and this narrow water passage — are at the center of the conflict between the US and Iran. It's a conflict that spans decades and has the potential to escalate in one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints.

The Persian Gulf is a mediterranean sea in Western Asia. The body of water is an extension of the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) through the Strait of Hormuz and lies between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest.
In 550 BC, the Achaemenid Empire established the first ancient empire in Persis (Pars, or modern Fars), in the southwestern region of the Iranian plateau. Consequently, in the Greek sources, the body of water that bordered this province came to be known as the "Persian Gulf".
During the years 550 to 330 BC, coinciding with the sovereignty of the Achaemenid Persian Empire over the Middle East area, especially the whole part of the Persian Gulf and some parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the name of "Pars Sea" is widely found in the compiled written texts.

The speedboats belonging to the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard have intercepted U.S. vessels in the Persian Gulf. A U.S. Navy spokesman said he was not aware of any such encounter at sea over the past days.
The report is the first such report in recent months. In May, the Guard rejected the U.S. Navy’s claim that fast-approaching Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz sparked a tense encounter a day after the U.S. said the Revolutionary Guard sent 13 armed speedboats too close to U.S. Navy vessels in the Strait.
