Netto UK

Netto is a discount supermarket chain in the United Kingdom.

Netto originally arrived in the United Kingdom in December 1990, as part of an internationalisation process by its Danish owner, Dansk Supermarked A/S. By May 2010, it operated 193 stores, before it was sold to Asda. In June 2014, Dansk Supermarked returned Netto in the United Kingdom, as a 50:50 joint venture with Sainsbury's.

History

Foundation

Netto began operating in England in Leeds, on December 13, 1990, with the company's United Kingdom headquarters being based, in the ex-mining village of South Elmsall, West Yorkshire.

Expansion

Netto primarily expanded in central England, before moving into Southern England, namely London. In January 2005, plans for a £200M investment in South Wales were announced, only to be cancelled. This was due to logistical issues, resulting in the sell-off of stores in Barry and Caerphilly. 1,700 jobs were promised in the expansion, with only a few being created.

By May 2010, there were a total of 193 stores in the United Kingdom, all in England and Wales.

Netto

Netto is Dutch/Danish/Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish/German/Polish/Hungarian for "net" (the antonym of gross). In most European languages the word "netto" refers to net worth or net pay.

Netto (Les Mousquetaires)

Netto is a French chain of hard discount stores owned by the Les Mousquetaires group. Previously known as Comptoir des Marchands, the chain changed its name to Netto in 2001. As of 2005 there are over 360 Netto stores in France and Portugal.

This chain of stores is neither owned nor affiliated with the Netto owned by the Danish Dansk Supermarked Group or the Netto owned by the German Edeka Group.

Netto is a Danish discount supermarket operating in several European countries. Netto is owned by Dansk Supermarked Group, which in turn is partly owned by the Maersk conglomerate. Netto also operates an express version of the store, known as Døgn Netto ("(24 hour) Day Netto"). Døgn stores offer the same service as regular Netto stores, with longer opening hours and higher prices.

In September 2009, Netto celebrated its 28th birthday, with special offers in store during the promotion.

In June 2014, Netto returned to the United Kingdom, with a joint venture with Sainsbury's, with the first store being opened in November 2014, in Moor Allerton, West Yorkshire.

Denmark

The first Netto store opened in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1981. At first the items sat in boxes and on pallets, but the chain quickly expanded, and the service level increased as well. Today there are 442 stores.

Germany

In September 1990, Netto started an internationalisation process, and Germany was the second country to gain Netto stores. The first store was opened in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern not long after the Fall of the Wall. Netto has since expanded in the states of Brandenburg, Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein, and there are a total of more than 340 stores by December 2014.
