A young woman has died after she was hit by a falling tree branch at a festival ground on the NSW Central Coast.

The woman was helping to set up the Lost Paradise music festival in the Glenworth Valley on Wednesday afternoon when she sat down in front of a tree.

A 21-year-old woman has died in hospital after being hit by a fallen tree branch at the Lost Paradise music festival. Vision courtesy ABC News 24.

A branch snapped off just before 4pm, hitting her in the head and causing critical injuries.

No attendees were at the site, where the festival kicked off on Thursday.

The 21-year-old went into cardiac arrest and was treated by paramedics from NSW Ambulance.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital in a Careflight helicopter, arriving in a critical condition with head, spinal and shoulder injuries, police said.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said the woman lived in Canberra.

Officers from Brisbane Water Local Area Command attended the festival site and established a crime scene.

Inspectors from Safe Work NSW also attended. A spokesman confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
