A man has delighted Melburnians after being filmed pretending to fish as a car drove through floodwaters under a bridge.

Paris Diaz Jordanou was having coffee with some mates when they decided to head down to the York Street Bridge in South Melbourne to see if any cars attempted to drive under it in the heavy rains on Thursday afternoon.

"We have cars go through there every time there is a heavy downpour," he said.

Mr Jordanou said he got there just in time to see a car go through before getting his fishing rod out to have a joke with his mates.

As he was mucking around, a second car went under the bridge and he had a "light bulb moment" knowing camera crews had set up in the hope of filming an unlucky driver.

"The camera crews literally just set up and wait for someone to drive through,"  Mr Jordanou said.

"I've jumped out in front and you can hear me saying 'I caught him'."

The 25-year-old truck driver, who lives in nearby Middle Park, can be heard uncontrollably laughing in the clip that was played on Channel Nine and Sky News.

He can also be heard yelling for the driver to stop before he went under.

"I was yelling 'no, no, no'," he said.

"But he must of thought I was saying 'go, go, go' - he must have got scared."

Mr Jordanou said he had received a great response and had radio interviews lined up for Friday.

"People have been saying 'you've made my day, my Christmas for giving me a laugh, I want to buy you a beer'," Mr Jordanou said.

Social media users have called him a range of names from the "most Australian bloke ever" to a "bloody knob jockey".
