A satiric misspelling is an intentional misspelling of a word, phrase or name for a rhetorical purpose. This is often done by replacing a letter with another letter (for example, k replacing c), or symbol (for example, $ replacing s, @ replacing a, or ¢ replacing c). Satiric misspelling is found particularly in informal writing on the Internet, but can also be found in some serious political writing that opposes the status quo.
Replacing the letter c with k in the first letter of a word came into use by the Ku Klux Klan during its early years in the mid-to-late 19th century. The concept is continued today within the group.
In the 1960s and early 1970s in the United States, leftists, particularly the Yippies, sometimes used Amerika rather than America in referring to the United States. It is still used as a political statement today. It is likely that this was originally an allusion to the German spelling of the word, and intended to be suggestive of Nazism, a hypothesis that the Oxford English Dictionary supports.
On is the title of a 1993 EP by the British electronic music artist Richard D. James, more commonly known by his recording alias of Aphex Twin. It was released on 15 November 1993 by Warp Records. On Remixes, featuring remixes by James, Reload and µ-Ziq, was also released on the same day.
Released after his album Selected Ambient Works 85–92, and just before his follow-up, Selected Ambient Works Volume II, On is often described as ambient techno despite the presence of harsh, abrasive beats on the title track. The title "On" is only mentioned once in the track list of the On EP.
The Sire Records (US) version of On contains only "On", "73-Yips", and "Xepha" with early fade-outs, followed by the Reload Mix of "On", and it is housed in an Ecopak case instead of the standard slimline jewel case in which the Warp (UK) release was packaged.
On is the third album by indie rock band Imperial Teen. It is the follow-up to their second full-length record What is Not to Love (1998), and was released in the U.S. on April 9, 2002 from Merge Records. On March 30, 2009 Amazon.com selected it as the 43rd greatest indie rock album of all time.
Transgender people experience a mismatch between their gender identity or gender expression and their assigned sex.Transgender is also an umbrella term because, in addition to including trans men and trans women whose binary gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex (and who are sometimes specifically termed transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition), it may include genderqueer people (whose identities are not exclusively masculine or feminine, but may, for example, be bigender, pangender, genderfluid, or agender). Other definitions include third-gender people as transgender or conceptualize transgender people as a third gender, and infrequently the term is defined very broadly to include cross-dressers.
Many transgender people experience a period of identity development. The degree to which individuals feel genuine, authentic, and comfortable within their external appearance and accept their genuine identity is referred to as transgender congruence. Being transgender is independent of sexual orientation; transgender people may identify as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, etc., or may consider conventional sexual orientation labels inadequate or inapplicable.
The Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (abbreviated THANS and TRANS) is a Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-based organisation that runs women's shelters. Pamela Harrison is THANS's executive director, and also serves as provincial co-ordinator. Rhonda Fraser, the executive director of Chrysalis House, is a member of THANS. THANS organises an annual purple ribbon awareness campaign in memory of the École Polytechnique massacre. THANS was founded in 1989. THANS conducted interviews with 34 physically abused women who subsequently sought resolution through family law mediation. In 2000, THANS released a report based on these interviews, stating that most of the women would not recommend legal mediation to other abused women. In 2008, THANS supported Bill 81, which they hoped would become the Domestic Violence Elimination Act, but Minister of Justice Cecil Clarke chose not to call the bill for a third reading. In 2009, Darrell Dexter of the New Democratic Party identified THANS in his promise to increase government funding of halfway houses in Nova Scotia. In 2012, THANS partnered with the World YWCA, Family SOS, Silent Witness Nova Scotia, and Leave Out Violence to host the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada's Ghosts of Violence, a ballet about domestic violence, in Halifax.
Evo is a comic book character from DC Comics/Wildstorm Comics. Real name, Michael Heller, was a member of the super human team DV8.
Michael Heller was one of the few young men and women selected to be part of Ivana Baiul's Gen¹³ project at International Operations. Heller gladly agreed to join the program because it, as he put it, " it beats spending eight months in juvie hall."
After becoming fully Gen-Active at Project: Genesis, Michael was gifted with the ability of trans-species morphing. Evo could turn himself into a humanoid bat, wolf or amphibian. He was code named Evo, based on these unique abilities. However, Evo was not of the first group of teens to be made gen-active by Ivana. After Ivana had lost her first group to John Lynch and a well played escape effort, Evo was drafted into Ivana's next group, known as the Deviants.
Already a troubled young man before being drafted into the Deviants, life on the team only fueled Evo's darker impulses. He expressed the desire to urinate on things to mark it as his, though it is not known if he actually did so. Things were only made worse as he became the avoided member of the group, seen as immature and unneeded by many of his teammates. He began to relish killing and the use of drugs, both easily available to him in his new position.
