That's all for now

Thanks for joining us, keep across Real Footy for all the news and analysis.

GWS have taken Joel Patfull and Adelaide picked Sam Shaw - both of whom have retired - for salary cap purposes. Neither will play in 2017.

In a nice story, Port Adelaide have taken 27-year-old forward Brett Eddy, who joins an AFL list for the first time.

Geelong take Zach Guthrie - the brother of Cats midfielder Cameron.

Mitch Brown - who turned down a new contract at West Coast - also misses out.

Other recycled players

Ex-Giant Jake Barrett joins the Lions.

Tendai Mzungu joins fellow discarded Docker Matt de Boer at GWS.

Shaun Edwards moves from Essendon to Sydney.

Former Gold Coast player Henry Schade joins Collingwood.

And breathe!

That's it for the rookie draft, and as always there an abundance of stories.

Xavier Richards - who last month played in a grand final - goes undrafted, as does South Australian youngster Jontty Scharenberg.

But Drew Petrie finds a home as expected at West Coast, one of several delisted players to find new homes, including delisted Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni, who joins cousin Jack at Carlton.

Ready to go

Essendon have the first pick

Before the draft

Adelaide took Ben Jarman as a father-son rookie. Geelong did likewise with Sam Simpson.

Meanwhile as Emma Quayle points out, Max Spencer (Gold Coast) and Zach Sproule (GWS) will join their clubs as pre-selected academy rookies.

Blake Grewar has joined Brisbane under Queensland zone rules, while Sydney has pre-listed Sam Fisher from Canberra under the same rules.

The draft order

These picks don't get traded beforehand, so each round goes in reverse 2016 ladder order, barring the clubs that don't have picks in that round because their rookie lists are already full.

This could be the last ever rookie draft

With the AFL considering scrapping the rookie list and extending the primary list in the new collective bargaining agreement.

There are 56 selections today, and our draft guru Emma Quayle has outlined some players to watch.

Delisted talls Drew Petrie and Xavier Richards are also names to keep an eye on.

WELCOME

It's a sunny afternoon in late November, but the footy train rolls on here in Melbourne, as clubs make their final additions to their lists for 2017 in the rookie draft.

The draft is being held at a room in AFL house, with clubs making their selections remotely. The pre-season draft, which has diminished in importance because of delisted free agency in recent seasons, will not take place this year because no clubs have elected to add any more players onto their primary lists.
