Vacancies in North East England

England's North East is the area around the great cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. It covers the counties of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teeside. The area is home to around 2.6 million people.

The North East was the cradle of Britain's industrial revolution in the 19th Century. The decline of the once-flourishing coal and ship-building industries has left the North East with the highest unemployment rate in the country, at around 10 per cent of the working-age population.

The region is served by buses and trams, while the main rail links run north to Edinburgh and west to Carlisle. The A1(M) and the A1914(M) are the major roads. Newcastle airport offers direct flights to around 74 destinations.

Famous sights include the Roman remains of Hadrian's Wall and Antony Gormley's statue The Angel of the North, which soars 20 metres into the sky above the A1 in Gateshead.
