The political and legal status of Taiwan (or the Taiwan Issue, Mainland Issue or Taiwan Strait Issue as referred to by the Republic of China) hinges on whether Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu should remain effectively independent as territory of the Republic of China (ROC); become unified with the territories now governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC); formally declare independence and become the Republic of Taiwan; as well as whether the existence and legal status as a state ("country") of both the ROC and the PRC is legitimate as a matter of international law, and how much diplomatic recognition either entity receives from the international community.
Currently, Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and some other minor islands effectively make up the jurisdiction of the state with the official name of Republic of China but widely known as Taiwan. The ROC, which took control of Taiwan (including Penghu and other nearby islands) in 1945, ruled mainland China and claimed sovereignty over Outer Mongolia (now Mongolia) and Tannu Uriankhai (part of which is present day Tuva, Russia) before losing the Chinese Civil War and relocating its government to Taipei, Taiwan in December 1949. On September 1951, Japan officially renounced its right to Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco without explicitly stating the sovereignty status of Taiwan, and hence some supporters of Taiwanese independence argue that the sovereignty of Taiwan is still held by the Allies.
Cross-Strait relations (simplified Chinese: 海峡两岸关系; traditional Chinese: 海峽兩岸關係; pinyin: Hǎixiá liǎng'àn guānxì) are the relations between mainland China and Taiwan, which are separated by the Taiwan Strait in the west Pacific Ocean, and in particular between their respective governments:
In 1949, with the Chinese Civil War turning decisively in the Communists' (CPC) favour, the ROC government led by the Kuomintang (KMT) retreated to Taipei, in Taiwan, while the CPC proclaimed the PRC government in Beijing.
Since then, the relations between China and Taiwan have been characterized by limited contact, tensions, and instability. In the early years, military conflicts continued, while diplomatically both governments competed to be the "legitimate government of China". More recently, questions around the political and legal status of Taiwan have focused on the alternative prospects of political unification with China or full Taiwanese independence. The People's Republic remains hostile to any formal declaration of independence and maintains its claim over Taiwan. At the same time, non-governmental and semi-governmental exchanges between the two sides have been increasing. From 2008, negotiations began to restore the "three links" (transportation, commerce, and communications) between the two sides, cut off since 1949. Party-to-party talks between the CPC and the KMT have resumed and semi-official negotiations through organizations representing the interests of their respective governments are being scheduled.

Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

Genres: Short,To call a city 'the best food city in the world' is kind if ridiculous. After all, food is subjective. But I've traveled a lot over the past 30 years, and I can honestly say that Taipei has been my favorite food city. It has a diversity that is somewhat rare in Asia. The Chinese food there is extremely good, no matter what part of China it's from. Taiwanese food is most often a take on an already delicious dish. We feasted for 7 days and loved every bite. Join us as we explore Taiwan's food culture. When it comes to eating Taiwanese street food in Taipei your hands down best bet is to check out one of the many Taiwan Night Market. In this street food challenge, we head over to Raohe Street Night Market (饒河夜市) to sample as many tasty and cheap bites to eat as possible. Locally Taiwanese street food is known as Xiaochi (小吃) and you'll find no shortage of delectable Taiwanese food here in the evenings whether you're craving sweet or savory food items. Compared to Shilin Night Market I actually kind of preferred Raohe Night Market (to visit take the MRT to Songshan Station松山車站) because it focused more on food as opposed to shopping. In our opinion, it is one of the best places to eat street food in Taipei, Taiwan and below you'll find a list of everything we sampled: 1) Black Pepper B...
After spending some time in Taipei, Taiwan it didn't take us long to find a favorite restaurant in the city specializing in Taiwanese soup dumplings known locally as xiao long bao 小笼包 - 小籠包. Heading to the original Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐 - 鼎泰丰) we placed an order for Xiaolongbao along with various other Taiwanese dishes that caught our eye. Join us for our travel vlog as we fly from Taipei, Taiwan to Hong Kong. In many ways our time spent at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (臺灣桃園國際機場) was a bit of a gong show with our flight being delayed, our gates changed and two failed attempts to exchange money and get a refund for our metro cards. However, being able to buy a nice set of metal chopsticks and having a silky smooth flight to Hong Kong more than made up for it. Complete review of China Airlines A350-900 flight in Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class on inaugural A350-900 flight from Taipei to Hong Kong. October 30, 2016 Music by Invisible Hands http://www.invisiblehands.co.uk/ For more info please see: http://www.SamChui.com
Flying the Eva Air upper deck of a Boeing 747-400. Turns out the whole upper cabin is Economy for this airline. I didn't care for it as much as the lower cabin, the extra space was nice but the air felt more stuffy. I've flown EVA numerous times to Asia since they're usually one of the cheaper airlines during my searches. Their mileage program doesn't offer too much for the amount of miles I've flown, but the airline itself has always been friendly, prompt and convenient on every flight. The crew treated me the same whether I'm flying business or economy so I'll continue to use this again carrier as long as their prices meet my budget. Thanks for watching.
The Boeing 747-400 is a major development and the best-selling model of the Boeing 747 family of jet airliners. While retaining the four-engine wide-body layout of its predecessors, the 747-400 embodies numerous technological and structural changes to produce a more efficient airframe. Its most distinguishing features versus preceding 747 models are 6-foot (1.8 m) winglets mounted on 6-foot (1.8 m) wing tip extensions, which are found on all 747-400s except for Japanese domestic market versions. The 747-400 is equipped with a two-crew glass cockpit, which dispenses with the need for a flight engineer, along with more fuel-efficient engines, an optional fuel tank in the horizontal stabilizer, and revised fuselage/wing fairings. The aircraft also features an all-new interior with upgraded in...
Step onboard China Airline’s beautiful 777. The cabin is truly one of the coziest and inviting cabins I have ever step into. Most airline cabins are filled with boring off-color white and metallic finishes, but on China Airlines’ 777 you will find wood accents, warm mood lighting, and bright and crisp clear screens. Often the seats are the most colorful furnishings in an airplane cabin, but on China Airlines the entire cabin, including the bathroom, come together to form a unique and beautiful flying experience. The galley was redesigned around a beautiful bar called the “Sky Lounge.” While the center piece of the Sky Lounge showcases varies alcoholic drinks, the most unique aspect of the Lounge is the many different Taiwanese snacks showcased on each side of the lounge. I especially loved...
EVA Air Flight BR 75 departing from Taipei, Taiwan to Bangkok, Thailand. Follow me on the short 3 hour flight onboard the heavy Boeing 777-300ER. You'll see everything from: Boarding, takeoff, inflight food all the way to landing at the modern & mighty Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport. Make your own opinions from what you see and compare it to what you're use to in air travel. For me, I found the service typical for Eva Air which is clean, quick and convenient with courteous staff onboard their aircraft. The food was ok, but after just coming off another Eva flight where we're fed twice... I really wasn't in the mood for more airline food. Summary: Will continue to use this airline for our travel needs to Asia when the price is right.

Taiwan''s exports are expected to shrink this year, leading many to forecast economic growth of around 2 percent. While the government says poor economic data is mainly due to international conditions, some believe a more serious industrial transformation is taking place. This factory at the Changhua Coastal Industrial Park produces synthetic leather. Many of its long-term downstream customers have moved away from Taiwan, making business increasingly difficult.Chen Yung-nengXing He Industry GM At the outset, we shouldn’t encourage them to move but to instead upgrade their technology and production. EVA Airways is the newest 5 star airline and it is well-deserved. Although their seat is not as beautiful as their competitor China Airlines, EVA's business class incorporates many elements typically found in first class. Each course is plated individually like first class, and the champagne Krug is typically considered a first class champagne. I think EVA is the only airline I know of that offers pajamas in business class, and they are very high quality. EVA is for sure the only airline to offer Rimowa kits in business class. EVA also offers a seat cover for making the bed unlike Cathay Pacific or China Airlines. The lounge was the only disappointment. After talking with the ground crew, I found out that EVA was late to the game and their Star Alliance partner Lufthansa did not have any m...
A red-eye flight experience on China Airlines' beautiful 777-300ER service from New York to Taipei. Taiwanese airlines might truly be the new 5 star airlines as they rapidly overhaul their image with a seriously amazing long haul product. The interior is full of wood décor, the IFE is brilliantly smooth and beautifully designed. IFE incorporates a lot of "tiles" similar to Windows 8 which works well for a touch screen interface. The service and meals were excellent. Flight attendants were always smiling and saying "thank you." When I asked for a toothbrush, the FA ended up bringing me another amenity kit in addition to the toothbrush. A simple but well stocked amenity kit was provided. This is a huge contrast to the premium economy experience with China Southern, which suffers from horribl...

On Sunday, October 25th, 2015 after visiting the Longshan Temple and the Tourist Night Market we drove around looking for a place where to have lunch, and a place where to park the car. As it was not possible find a single parking spot, we drove away from the centre to a Recreation Centre where David had a membership card. Very beautiful installation in gym, swimming pool and sauna and internet connection (high speed). There we had a Chinese lunch, drink a Taiwanese beer and a big cup of coffee. Come discover Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s busiest harbor. Located in southwestern Taiwan, this city boasts scenic seaside spots, magnificent mountain views, and a captivating culture. Begin your journey on the island of Cijin, and visit Tianhou Temple, where Matzu, the protector of fishermen and sailors, is honored. Next, head further inland and hike the trails at Monkey Mountain; have a spot of tea with a view of the city as monkeys swing overhead from the treetops. Other popular attractions include Love River, which offers scenic pathways that run through the city, and Lotus Lake, where the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are said to give visitors good luck. At the lake, honor the Goddess of Mercy and God of War, and marvel at the massive statue of the Mysterious Warrior, Xuan Wu. After visiting Lotu...

Kaohsiung is a city worth checking out in South Taiwan. To get there from Taipei, just take the rapid rails and in a few hours, you'll be there. In Kaohsiung, I met up with local friends Maggie and Wennie who showed me around Kaohsiung's harbor area and Cijin Island. But first, before the ferry, we stopped by a shaved ice place that serves shaved ice by gigantic bowls. It was delicious and super sweet- perfect for a hot day in Taiwan. Next, we boarded a quick ferry to Cijin Island, where seafood restaurants line both sides. This was full of tourists, but rightfully so because the street food was also delicious. We ate some roasted fresh squid- the best I've ever had. Then we stopped and checked out some weird ginger sauce tomato dip dish that can only be found regionally. Overall, it was ...
