I always understood the concept but didn't grasp the reality of the situation until I tasked myself with exploring the great state. Suddenly Texas was bigger than it had ever been before. This meant I had to pick and choose the areas that showed the most promise and not be tempted to drive hundreds of miles for a single abandoned building that might not be perfect for a shoot. So I made a plan to tackle the loan star state, and off I went. My first stop was Galveston Texas. I had anticipated to find a lot of abandonment here, but that was a false prophecy. In fact I could only find one location with my efforts,called the Flagstaff Brewery. This place was everything I could have asked for. Access to the building easy to access and explore. Apparently this monster has been vacant since 1981. Next I went to Austin which would serve as my hub for exploration over the next few days. There wasn't much abandonment in the city, I guess they had some rule where a place couldn't site abandoned for any period of time, but there was one little gem to be found. The Castle Hill Graffiti Park a.k.a The Hope Gallery. It was more a destination for artist and tourist than an abandoned location, but it still fit a lot of my criteria and it was just plain cool as hell. San Antonio was next. I had found a few promising places during my research but the reality of these prospects was lack luster. I did eventually check out a place called "The Devil's Den". The google maps view didn't look super exciting but the name alone drew me in. So I went to check it out. It was pretty cool giant block of concrete covered from head to toe in Wu-Tang tags which earned it huge style points. There was other stuff around indicating a much larger facility at one point. Somewhere from Galveston to Austin I found an old grain silo. I found a sign on the wall posted by Go Green Texas Ranch that pretty much said if you're dumb enough to come in here we are not responsible for the consequences. Everything was rotten, EVERYTHING! And proper foot placement quickly became a technique for survival. My overall experience of the Go Green Texas Ranch led me to the conclusion that, although the location was cool and unique it was too sketch for a photo shoot. Later in my travels I would pass through Amarillo TX giving me a chance to check out the Cadillac Ranch. In the middle of a field there are about 10 Cadillac sticking up out of the ground at about a 80% angle. It was cold and the field was full of the kind of mud that rips your shoes right off your feet. But I trudged through to get a closer look. It was really something special up close. You could see layers of paint caked on to the old Cadillac's as if they marked they years like rings on a tree. In the end it wasn't right for a shoot, but I was glad to have stopped by. In the end I chose to shoot an the Flagstaff Brewery. I didn't have a brewery in the BARE USA collection yet. The ease of accessibility, it's proximity to available models, and is sear size provided everything I needed and more. Sometimes a place can be too big, with too many options. This location was pushing it. I met up with Chelsea Jeeter, a brave and beautiful model. She was simply amazing, willing to climb and crawl through the grim in search of that perfect shot. I was hot that day really hot so we worked hard and in the end walked away with a handful of amazing photographs.
