Dolphin serial killers?

Scientists who autopsy cetaceans that wash up dead on British beaches have come to a grim conclusion: some species are being killed by bottlenose dolphins.

Dead porpoises (and other cetaceans) turn up regularly on beaches around Britain. According to a Defra report last year (pdf), the cause of death of 15 out of 56 porpoise bodies found - the majority - was "physical trauma (bottlenose dolphin attack)". The photo above shows the rake marks on a harbour porpoise caused by a bottlenose dolphin.

The killings were first reported from the north-east coast of Scotland, then off the coast of Wales, and this week the body of a Risso's dolphin was found further south still, in Cornwall. The Risso's dolphin (see photo below) was said to have been killed over food shortages and dolphins were described as being so hungry they are turning on each other.

Autopsies show some of the dead animals (13 out of 56) have died of starvation. But not all, and the bottlenose killers are not eating the porpoises they kill. In the case of the Risso's dolphin, it is not even a competitor for the same prey (Risso's feed on squid). So why are they killing other cetaceans?

"We can't state confidently that the killings are tied to declining fish stocks," says dolphin expert Nick Tregenza, who advises the Marine Strandings Network in Cornwall. His guess? "They could be doing it for fun."

Bottlenose dolphins are known to spread behaviour culturally and there are extensive records of violence between and within dolphin pods.

"Killing for fun" could be another culturally transmitted behaviour.

Tregenza likens it to the spread of milk-bottle opening by blue tits.
"It could be a form of play rather than food competition," he suggests.

Alternatively, he says, a bottlenose dolphin might have tried to help the weak Risso's dolphin and become angry when the Risso's failed to respond.

In a sick way, I kind of like the "killing for fun" explanation. Tregenza says the Cornwall Wildlife Trust has reported that dolphins have been seen picking up stones from the sea bed and throwing them on the surface. "They were thought to be throwing stones at seals on rocks not far away," Tregenza says.

Stone-throwing and killing for fun. Dolphins are even more like us than we thought.

Killing for fun...yeh, I immediately thought of humans as well.

Cats also do it. Even when cats are well fed they still want to hunt and play with their prey as it slowly dies.

So what's the common driver to kill for fun between these three species?

Slightly overstated. I can't remember the last time I killed for fun...

Similar behavior has been seen in Orcas (killer whales), which are related to dolphins.

I'm sure I saw a program on this a while back where they speculated that it was some kind of competition killing (the dolphins were doing it to young of their own kind and the porpoises killed were of a similar size, for "practice" or out of some kind of habit.
I'm not sure if it was specific to a particular group of dolphins or the program just focused on that one group where competition between males was particularly intense.
Maybe the dolphins have massive inferiority complexes like Ernest Hemingway, and are killing to fill the deficit? Big game hunting worked for Papa, so why not dolphins?

Male Lions taking over a pride will kill the young of previouis incumbant so as to ensure their blood line. Could dolphins be doing something similar ?
I believe the dolphins are on drugs. I think they must be smoking crack. Did anyone check the dead dolphons to see if they had been relieved of their wallet and/or jewelry. Crackhead dolphins.... what is the world coming to???

how about they are killing them to "impress" the females? because its mating season or something ha anyone though of that?
Maybe the killers are the females to show the males what they will do whith them if they don't behave well?
Maybe they were killed because they were terrorist dolphins.

Someone has been letting the dolphin play GTA4. It's video games that are to blame!

Heaven forbid, that a wild animal kills another wild animal what is the world coming to?

Who said dolphins were cute? They are hunters/predators. This is what happens when humans try to personalise another species. Misconception.
I'm surprised this hasn't been blamed on global warming.

"So what's the common driver to kill for fun between these three species?"

The brain parasite Toxoplasma gondii.

"So long and thanks for all the fish"

They're just practicing for when they emerge from the waters and enslave humanity, a la "Simpsons".
A Christian dolphin would never do such a thing.
Never trust a species that smiles all the time. It's up to something...

Well, that pretty much confirms it? Intelligence is a pre-requisite for deliberate and premeditated violence.
Would you like to understand the true nature behind these killings? There is a level of abuse that you would have to consider. You would have to consider 60 years of industrial imbalance. There are a few things you would have to consider. But let me just say this.... Consider a species and why they would turn on themselves. Then consider the education or lack there of around that... Still Considering? Good.. at the end of this exercise you should have some pretty heavy conclusions and new insights. Thus providing new direction. Dolphins are under attack by?><| Hmmm.. What would cause a highly intelligent creature to do this?

The dolphin was my totem for a while and I came to understand much of their nature. I would love to discuss this and other topics in depth with anyone.

i may have to agree with the hitler dolphin complex cos they are known to kill sharks frequently in australia so because of the dolphins bad eysight they may mistace the other species for a predator of some sought

Sounds like a very good excuse not to admit, that "the killings are tied to declining fish stocks". Of course, they can not prove it is because of starvation, so it must be maniacs! And the climat warming has nothing to do with it, no no! BTW the cilmat changes affects animals not only by destroing their food. Maybe they are irritated because their environment changes? If you were overheated all the time and couldn't find your favourite meals anymore you think you'd like it? And no possibillities to change anything...
Awesome Anonymous.. One.. you know this is part of the truth. Declining fish stocks.. due to over fishing and unregulated poaching. This as well as the sonar as well as the naval use of dolphins for various purposes... Dolphins use 100% of their brain and we are causing that to decline rapidly. Dolphins are showing us a world we created not them.
This is a great scoop, a great article. It's kind mortifying! It's mortifying to me for two main reasons!

1.) Dolphins are killing other cetaceans -- possibly for fun -- and throwing rocks at seals!

2.) Fifteen out of 56 is NOT a MAJORITY! A majority occurs when greater than half of a set meets a given criterion! In political terms, when three or more entities are running in an election, the winner has won a "relative majority" of the votes. But that is a political term, not a statistical term! That's no small error for a "scientific" magazine!

Please correct -- and feel free to delete this comment afterward. It'll tidy up the article, and help stem the intellectual collapse in our ever more slop-minded country!

15 out of 56 is clearly not a majority -- I think he means more than any other. I would say "plurality" but I think that's only used for voting.

don't tell me that these dolphins have had a full-of-conflict childhood? how can a sane animal "copy" the behaviour of an insane human.
By Anonymous Anonymous on September 16, 2008 3:40 PM
iTS THE TYPICAL PRIMAL INSTINCT... BUT THE COMMON DRIVER IS... IN MY OPINION.. ENVIROMENTAL PRESSURE... AND AN ABUNDANCE OF SOMETHING.. FOOD.. PEOPLE ETC.

WE HAVE TO ALSO TAKE SOMETHING ELSE INTO ACCOUNT.. DOLPHINS ARE USED IN WAR GAMES.
"So what's the common driver to kill for fun between these three species?"

The brain parasite Toxoplasma gondii.

We can Cure this. As well as any other parasite. Yeah this is a bold statement and the reason its so bold is that I dont live in the world where I rely on the media for my truth.
A sane anything can copy the behavior of an insane creature.. if it is bombarded with this daily. So much so that it becomes the natural state. This is how humans got there. We call killers insane.. but we never call our own trained killers that.. Ever stop to think about this fact..?
