Fremantle Dockers under orders to return fit and refreshed for AFL pre-season

After a disappointing 2016 marred by injury and poor form Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is expecting his players to step up in their preparation for 2017.

Ruckman Jon Griffin told the club's website on Wednesday that while players would have a two-week break from the club until New Year they were expected to return in peak condition.

"We see it as a really important phase to prepare for 2017," Griffin told fremantlefc.com.au.

"The program is quite tough and everyone's expected to comply with that 100 per cent. All the boys know it's a really important phase. We really value it as it does prepare us well for the coming season."

Griffin said the coaches wanted the work rate to stay high, but also emphasised that players needed to return refreshed.

"The program is a combination of everything, mainly running and weights," Griffin said.  "Obviously they also give us a bit of time to check out mentally, but when we train we're sticking to tough running sessions and weights programs."

Griffin said the club had recruited well and the Dockers were enthusiastic about what was to come in 2017.

"It's been awesome, it's great to have some experience come into the team and we've got a lot of talented young players too," Griffin said. "It's really exciting and it gives a bit more enthusiasm and a bit more of a list, so I'm looking forward to joining them and getting back into it."
