Which deck material should I use?


When reviewing deck ideas and the various material options, always keep price, appearance and ongoing maintenance in mind. Wood deck designs look the most natural, but also require the most maintenance, like staining and weatherproofing. Composite, on the other hand, is easier to care for but might not look as authentic. Plastic decking can be a less expensive alternative and removes any risk of splinters, though again, it won’t provide the same look as wood if that’s what you’re aiming for. Aluminum is one of the more unique deck ideas, but metal can be pricey and heat up in summertime. Since decks are custom built, it’s relatively easy to personalize their design. That being said, with endless layouts to consider, it’s important to know all of your options before diving into the building process. A raised deck design often includes a staircase or a few steps, which helps with backyard access, especially from two-story homes or any structures that are not flush with the ground outside. Platform decks are placed on or just above the ground, while a multilevel design combines aspects from both. You can even opt for a free standing platform, which is placed out in the yard and not attached to the house at all. How should I decorate my outdoor deck?

Include an umbrella and table for easy al fresco dining, and purchase a weatherproof sofa and chaise lounges for ultimate relaxation. And since the yard is great for those cool summer nights, don’t forget about proper lighting when planning out your deck decor. Think about how bright you want the area to be and explore your options accordingly. Look into LED bulbs and solar lighting options, and consider placement of fixtures on deck railings and posts. You’ll notice in photos that lots of deck designs showcase hanging string lights or lanterns over the communal space, and occasionally a fire pit for cozy conversation and s’mores. Top it all off with some potted plants to add a bit of visual interest, and you’re all set to enjoy the new space!
