In a variation of his Asphalt Jungle role, Sterling Hayden plays veteran criminal Johnny Clay, planning one last big heist before settling down to a respectable marriage with Fay (Colleen Gray). Teaming with several cohorts, Johnny masterminds a racetrack robbery. The basic flaw is that all the crooks involved are losers and small-timers who find themselves in way over their heads despite their supposed cleverness. None of the participants is more pathetic than George Peatty (Elisha Cook Jr.), who is goaded into the robbery by his covetous and far-from-faithful wife (Marie Windsor). As in a Greek tragedy, Johnny's best-laid schemes go awry. "Shut up, patzer"
I love this fascinating scene from Stanley Kubrick's second feature, "The Killing (1956), a powerful "noir" heist picture starring the wonderful Sterling Hayden. The dialog is dymanite stuff. David Mamet himself called this scene, "one of the great talk scenes in movies.
The scene takes place in a New York City chess club, based on a place on 42nd St. that Kubrick (himself an avid chess player) used to hang out at. It was known as The Flea House. This scene is a between Johnny (Sterling Hayden), brains in the heist , and Maurice (Kola Kwariani) who is to be the brawn. Though it is intereresting that the dialog clearly flips these roles about who's who.
Kola was an acquaintance of Kubricks from the old days at the Flea House. Kola was an avid chess player and had been a champion wrestler. As you will see watching this, Kola had an incredible screen presence, thick Georgian accent and all. His accent is so thick it makes this scene a bit hard to understand, so I also put up a version with subtitles. The dialog in this scene is wonderful stuff. You must understand every word to get how good it is.
Enjoy this snippet, and if you havent seen THE KILLING, search it out; Its Top-notch Kubrick. Easily missed, even the camera move with the mirror at the start is a brilliant solution Kubrick came up with. Here is a later scene showing Maurice doing what he was hired to do; start a bar fight and be a distraction for the heist.

The Killing (film)
The Killing is a 1956 film noir produced by James B. Harris and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It was written by Kubrick and Jim Thompson and based on the novel Clean Break by Lionel White. The drama features Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Vince Edwards, Marie Windsor, and Elisha Cook Jr.
Plot
Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) is a veteran criminal planning one last heist before settling down and marrying Fay (Coleen Gray). He plans to steal $2 million from the money-counting room of a racetrack during a featured race. He assembles a team consisting of a corrupt cop (Ted de Corsia), a betting window teller (Elisha Cook Jr.) to gain access to the backroom, a sharpshooter (Timothy Carey) to shoot the favorite horse during the race to distract the crowd, a wrestler (Kola Kwariani) to provide another distraction by provoking a fight at the track bar, and a track bartender (Joe Sawyer).
George Peatty, the teller, tells his wife Sherry (Marie Windsor) about the impending robbery. Sherry is bitter at George for not delivering on the promises of wealth he once made her, so George hopes telling her about the robbery will placate and impress her. Sherry does not believe him at first but, after learning that the robbery is real, enlists her lover Val Cannon (Vince Edwards) to steal the money from George and his associates.

The Killing
In Seattle, Det. Sarah Linden is on what is supposed to be her last day on the job. She and her son Jack are supposed to leave that evening to join her fiancé in Sonoma. Her replacement, Det. Stephen Holder, is ready to take over but they answer a call from a patrol car who have found a bloodied sweater in a field. When the missing girl, Rosie Larsen, is found in the trunk of a car at the bottom of a lake it turns out the car is registered to the campaign committee for councilman Darren Richmond, who is running for mayor. Linden delays her departure for what she hopes will be only a few days.

"Shut up, patzer" I love this fascinating scene from Stanley Kubrick's second feature, "The Killing (1956), a powerful "noir" heist picture starring the wonderful Sterling Hayden. The dialog is dymanite stuff. David Mamet himself called this scene, "one of the great talk scenes in movies. The scene takes place in a New York City chess club, based on a place on 42nd St. that Kubrick (himself an avid chess player) used to hang out at. It was known as The Flea House. This scene is a between Johnny (Sterling Hayden), brains in the heist , and Maurice (Kola Kwariani) who is to be the brawn. The scene takes place in a New York City chess club, based on a place on 42nd St. that Kubrick (himself an avid chess player) used to hang out at. It was known as The Flea House. Kola was an acquaintance of Kubricks from the old days at the Flea House. Kola was an avid chess player and had been a champion wrestler. As you will see watching this, Kola had an incredible screen presence, thick Georgian accent and all. His accent is so thick it makes this scene a bit hard to understand, so I also put up a version with subtitles. The dialog in this scene is wonderful stuff. You must understand every word to get how good it is.
Enjoy this snippet, and if you havent seen THE KILLING, search it out; Its Top-notch Kubrick. Easily missed, even the camera move with the mirror at the start is a brilliant solution Kubrick came up with. Here is a later scene showing Maurice doing what he was hired to do; start a bar fight and be a distraction for the heist.

Johnny (Sterling Hayden) holds up the racetrack bank clerks, stealing millions in the process.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Killing was director Stanley Kubrick's first major film effort -- though, like Kubrick's earlier films, it was economically produced with an inexpensive cast. In a variation of his Asphalt Jungle role, Sterling Hayden plays veteran criminal Johnny Clay, planning one last big heist before settling down to a respectable marriage with Fay (Colleen Gray). Teaming with several cohorts, Johnny masterminds a racetrack robbery. The basic flaw is that all the crooks involved are losers and small-timers who find themselves in way over their heads despite their supposed cleverness. None of the participants is more pathetic than George Peatty (Elisha Cook Jr.), who is goaded into the robbery by his covetous and far-from-faithful wife (Marie Windsor). As in a Greek tragedy, Johnny's best-laid schemes go awry. Prominently featured in the cast of The Killing are offbeat character actors Tim Carey and Joe Turkel, who'd show up with equally showy roles in future Kubrick productions. The Killing is based on the novel Clean Break by Lionel White.
