Car insurance claims rise due to animal accidents

As Melbourne'€™s suburban areas expand, more and more motorists are making car insurance claims because of damage caused by an animal.

According to police, the rider pulled up a short distance from the site of the crash and fell from his bike, sliding down an embankment on the side of the roadway.

Passers-by noticed the fallen bike and went to the man's assistance.

He was taken by ambulance to the Northern Hospital in Epping shortly thereafter.

According to Ambulance Victoria, paramedics suspected the man had broken his leg in the accident.

He died the following Friday, December 23, in hospital.

It was unclear whether the man died as a result of his leg injuries, from other injuries or from another condition.

Ambulance Victoria were also unable to confirm whether the patient was in a serious or stable condition at the time he was conveyed to hospital from the accident, nor whether he suffered concussion.

Northern Health declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

However, a spokesman for the hospital did say that "as a matter of best practice, Northern Health has commenced a review of this case and will provide full disclosure to the patient's family."

The motorcyclist's death takes the number of lives lost on Victoria's roads in 2016 to 287, up 38 from this time last year.
