Weather Warnings - Flood Warning
Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Northern Territory
Initial Flood Watch for the Bonaparte and North West Coastal Rivers
Issued at 12:51 pm CST on Thursday 29 December 2016
Flood Watch Number: 1
A deep, moist northwest flow is causing heavy rainfall across much of the Top
End as the monsoon trough starts to form.
Areas of heavy rainfall between 50 mm to 100 mm are forecast across the
Bonaparte and North West Coastal Rivers over the next few days. These falls may
lead to strong river and stream rises which may affect road access at times.
Some communities may become isolated.
Catchments likely to be affected over the next few days include the Victoria,
Adelaide and Daly Rivers.
See www.bom.gov.au/australia/warnings/ to view all of the Bureau's current
warning products.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
- Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
- Stop children playing in or near floodwaters
- Create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillowcases and
shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your
home
- Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be
treated as live
