Carby draws on the work of Equiano to claim a multiplicity of selves. A cosmopolitan self is possible. Why claim a narrow nationalist one?

Carby: To ask the origin of herself--she identifies the libraries where she found sanctuary.

Carby: 'Where are you from' is posed not to elicit information but to test a hypothesis.

Carby: 'Where are you from' contains an infinite number of questions that are neither innocent nor harmless.

Carby: Her claims to belonging to England are not simply denied but seen as a provocation. She was a national aberration

Carby observes the irony of obscuring the dispossession of the commons by incorporating names/histories into privatised land

Carby observes that her neighbourhood was a 'nursery of white supremacist hatred'

This is a riveting reading about what it means to be a working class Black woman. Carby also reveals an experience of sexual assault.

Carby positions her experience as a Black woman in relation to class and life on a post-war working class estate in London.

Carby: By asking the question 'Where are you from?' this generates the fictions of a racialised national heritage
