2017 weather outlook

The Bureau of Meteorology release their climate and water outlook for the first quarter of 2017.

"We're going for a top of 32 degrees, but it could possibly be even warmer," he said.

The warm easterly winds will bring higher temperatures for the Perth metropolitan area over the New Year period, and regional WA will also feel their effects.

Broome is forecast to swelter through a maximum of 34, while the mercury will hit 33 in Geraldton and 29 in Busselton.

Esperance will be one of the coolest areas in the state as 2017 begins, with a maximum of just 22 degrees.

Mr How said while the Perth area should be experience a pleasant New Years Day, New Year's Eve party-goers should pack a jacket.

"Around midnight, temperatures should be around 17 to 18 degrees, and it could get a little windy in the later part of the evening," he said.

"The wind should start to ease off at midnight, but it could still be a bit breezy."

The forecast for New Years Eve in the Perth metropolitan area is currently 28 degrees, with an overnight low of 16.

The mild temperatures come after last year's record-breaking forecast, which saw WA become the hottest place on earth on December 29- with Geraldton ringing in at a scorching 45.1 degrees.
