Floods shut major roads throughout WA's North West

WA residents travelling home along the Great Northern Highway post-Christmas have been asked to check the Main Roads website as road closures continue to affect the area.

Ex-tropical cyclone Yvette and a tropical low pressure system have caused chaos in the region, and the Great Northern Highway has been forced to close due to flooding.

Heatwave predicted over Christmas

Flooding rain continues over parts of WA and NT, while Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney will be gripped in a heatwave over the next week.

The highway is closed in both directions between Newman to Meekatharra, and Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek.

The Blina Turnoff to the Great Northern Highway turnoff on Gibb River Road is also closed. 

In the Pilbara, vehicles can no longer access, Marble Bar Road between Marble Bar and Nullagine.

The Department of Fire & Emergency Services warned people in the vicinity of Fitzroy River and Fitzroy Crossing to take action, as water levels may continue to rise.

YouTube channel Oz Outback Family documented the dramatic rise between December 20 through to Christmas.

Broome has recorded its wettest December on record, after 226 mm was dumped on the town's airport in a 24-hour period.
