Pre-production is the process of fixing some of the elements involved in a film, play, or other performance. There are three parts in a production: pre-production, production, and post-production. Pre-production ends when the planning ends and the content starts being produced.
In filmmaking and video production, pre-production formally begins once a project has been greenlit. At this stage, finalizing preparations for production go into effect. Financing will generally be confirmed and many of the key elements such as principal cast members, director and cinematographer are set. By the end of pre-production, the screenplay is usually finalized and satisfactory to all the financiers and other stakeholders.
During pre-production, the script is broken down into individual scenes storyboards and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are identified. An extremely detailed schedule is produced and arrangements are made for the necessary elements to be available to the film-makers at the appropriate times. Sets are constructed, the crew is hired, financial arrangements are put in place and a start date for the beginning of principal photography is set. At some point in pre-production there will be a read-through of the script which is usually attended by all cast members with speaking parts, the director, all heads of departments, financiers, producers, and publicists.
Ryan finishes discussing his way of doing pre-production, with Storyboarding, lining the script and scheduling. Get the Storyboard template here: http://bit.ly/story-board

Pre-Production is the first, and extremely critical, phase in creating a video. Amateurs may be inclined to skip over this phase, but it's important to realize all bases that pre-productions covers so that when it's time to go on the shoot, everything is a as streamlined as possible. This is important, not only because it keeps your day on schedule and smooth, but it might even save you a few bucks because of your time management and organizational skills. Trust us, you'll want to listen to these tips and more. We'll cover pre-production topics more in depth in future videos. Stay tuned! In part 1, we will talk about pre-production and figuring out all the stuff that needs to be done before you pick up a camera and start shooting. We'll cover story-telling, location selection, sun angle, building a storyboard, camera gear, and more! Part 2: Shooting...

Before the production of Ice Age 4 began, I had the chance (and luck) to work with the Lead Characters to help create the coolest bad guy in the movie, Captain Gutt. For me, pre-production is the best part of the movie making process - the time to define personalities, try different things, explore, invent, discuss, propose, whatever your imagination may offer to make the characters great! Of course, throughout this process some ideas make the final cut, others don't. The greatest reward is being a part of this process. Here are a couple animation tests I made to explore/define Captain's Gutt personality.
i had the FS700 for a few days and shot mostly slow motion as expected, no 4k add on available yet. I avoided the 960fps as I found it unusable in this pre-production camera but at 480fps, as long as you avoid fine patterns and lines that could moire/ aliase due to the half vertical resoltuoon AND it's well lit it could well cut in in with full HD. Loads more shots in review to come! my review will be coming soon, nice and in depth and impartial as always.
While in pre-production for "Mobius", there was a great deal of discussion between the film’s writers, Jon Carr and Justin Hamilton, and I about how to go about scripting the film in the most efficient way. I thought this might be interesting to show - it's the animatic for Address Is Approximate which was essential for working out the stop motion timings. Once the music track was chosen I drew the storyboards which I then scanned & edited together, also adding basic animation and reference graphics so I could get a clear idea of the exact number of frames I needed to shoot. You'll see that there are a couple of shots in here that didn't make it to the final cut, but overall this is pretty much how it came out. The GH2 that was in my hands was the pre-production one. The firmware is the 0.2 but the definitive one will be the 1.0, much more better than the 0.2. The images at 3200 ISO are noisy, but I saw other videos filmed on a GH2 production model and the images are stunning. I will test the definitive one as soon as I can!
