Inside the story: Sydney 2026 | Sydney in the Future

Sydney 2026 | Sydney in the Future is a Sydney Morning Herald interactive feature series on how we’ll live and how our city will work in 10 years. The series continues the Herald’s proud tradition of leading the debate on the shape of our great city.

Exclusively for subscribers, City Editor, Jacob Saulwick, provides an inside view into how the idea for the feature originated, and the effort that went behind delivering a feature with multiple chapters and leading interactive elements.

Jacob, can you tell us about how the idea to do this interactive feature series came about?

Jacob Saulwick: The idea came from Darren Goodsir, our editor-in-chief. Darren is a former Herald transport reporter and urban affairs editor, and is a bit of a nut for rail lines and planning maps. But we probably should have beaten him to the idea. There is a lot going on in Sydney at the moment and, whether you’re excited or a sceptic, it can be difficult to keep abreast of it all.

The city is also in the midst of profound and interesting demographic changes. There is huge pressure on schools and childcare spots in a number of different areas, and also significantly higher numbers of people above the age of 70 and 80 in some suburbs. How will the health and education systems cope? They’re difficult questions to answer, so probably good ones to explore.
