Newspapers.com is a newspaper database in the family of companies associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 73 million pages from 3,000-plus newspapers, mostly local United States papers with some Canadian and elsewhere. (Lists: https://www.newspapers.com/papers/ and https://www.newspapers.com/browse/). It is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 34 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. The collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s. Free accounts through the Wikipedia Library do not include access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content.

As part of a pilot program with Wikipedia Library, they generously offered the use of 100 accounts to their database of American newspapers. Due to the success of the program and the large number of requests from users, they have since increased the number of accounts available to 400.

Further participation[edit]

Using the "Clipping" function[edit]

Both Newspapers.com and The Wikipedia Library would prefer that articles citing Newspapers.com link to clippings. Clippings allow Newspapers.com subscriber-editors to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper and share them through unique URLs. Thus readers who click on a Newspapers.com Clipping link will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. Clippings can be deleted by the user who created the clipping, but otherwise remain permanently open access, even when user accounts expire. For more information about how to use clippings, follow this link.

  2. Alansohn (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) As a firm believer in adding references to articles, I'm finding that fewer sources are available online and that there are many available at Newspapers.com that are just outside my grasp. The addition of these new sources will help me create, expand and references and allow readers to more easily trace back to the original source. Alansohn (talk) 15:50, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

  4. choster (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Although I am not as active as I was several years ago, I have been engaged over the last year or so in expanding articles about local churches, particularly in the United States. Information about these communities is often very sparse outside of NRIS, and local newspaper coverage of personnel changes, fundraising campaigns, and the like would be helpful. The 19th/early 20th century American focus seems particularly well-suited. - choster (talk) 22:37, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

  5. Joseph2302 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I create lots of biographies, some of which are historical, and access to old newspapers, as well as recent newspapers stored at Newspapers.com e.g. Sydney Morning Herald, would be beneficial to these articles. I have British Newspaper Archive access through Wikipedia, and would use this access in a similar way to improve articles. Joseph2302 10:01, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

  6.  (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have written historical and biographical articles for a while, and have found many useful resources on Newspapers.com. I recently signed up for a trial, which provided me with an enormous quantity of very useful articles, none of which I had found through traditional research methods. The trial has since expired and another editor directed me here so I can continue using this invaluable resource. Thank you. ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 19:33, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

  7. 930310 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) It seems that the NewspaperArchive service is malfuntioning. Since I would like to have access to a newspaper resource, Newspapers.com seems to be the best available alternative. I mainly use it to "flesh" out articles, usually on the Swedish Wikipedia. If approved, I would try to use it for this. 930310 (talk) 12:56, 19 November 2016 (UTC)
  8. InformationvsInjustice (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I just recently edited Opposition Party (United States) and in the process had to disambiguate many articles about Congressmen from the 1800's. The only source for any of them was their congressional biographies. I see this all the time. I am eager to have better tools to put to use.
