The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

The South Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO), an intergovernmental agency based in Fiji is assisting in co-managing Palau's Alii Host program.
SPTO has funded a number of individuals in the government sector to take part in the Alii Host customer service based training program in efforts to enhance their skills in communicating and interacting with tourists.
Filipe Tuisawau, SPTO's Human Resource Development Specialist, recently visited Palau to check on the progress of the program, observe the training and gather feedbacks from both the Tri-Org and the participants.
He says the program, which is administered by the Tri-Org, consisting of the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), Belau Tourism Association (BTA) and the Palau Chamber of Commerce (PCOC), is helping to empower those in the frontline such as customs and immigrations officers, who will be meeting the tourists first before they go their respective accommodations.
"These people are critical because they give the first impression of the country," said Tuisawau. "That's why were working with BTA and PVA in this training."
He says not only is it important to empower those in the frontline, it's also important that they appreciate what tourism is and how important it is to Palau.

During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. South Pacific Tourism Organizations Funds Palau Alii Host Program
The South Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO), an intergovernmental agency based in Fiji is assisting in co-managing Palau's Alii Host program. SPTO has funded a number of individuals in the government sector to take part in the Alii Host customer service based training program in efforts to enhance their skills in communicating and interacting with tourists. Filipe Tuisawau, SPTO's Human Resource Development Specialist, recently visited Palau to check on the progress of the program, observe the training and gather feedbacks from both the Tri-Org and the participants. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

Palau /pəˈlaʊ/ (help·info), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pelew.[3]
Palau's most populous islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu. The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an oceanic island several miles to the south. About two-thirds of the population live on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

The South Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO), an intergovernmental agency based in Fiji is assisting in co-managing Palau's Alii Host program.
SPTO has funded a number of individuals in the government sector to take part in the Alii Host customer service based training program in efforts to enhance their skills in communicating and interacting with tourists.
Filipe Tuisawau, SPTO's Human Resource Development Specialist, recently visited Palau to check on the progress of the program, observe the training and gather feedbacks from both the Tri-Org and the participants.
He says the program, which is administered by the Tri-Org, consisting of the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), Belau Tourism Association (BTA) and the Palau Chamber of Commerce (PCOC), is helping to empower those in the frontline such as customs and immigrations officers, who will be meeting the tourists first before they go their respective accommodations.
"These people are critical because they give the first impression of the country," said Tuisawau. "That's why were working with BTA and PVA in this training."
He says not only is it important to empower those in the frontline, it's also important that they appreciate what tourism is and how important it is to Palau.

President Signs Palau's Minimum Wage Bill
By Rolynda Johnathan Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. has signed the bill proposing to increase the minimum wage. At the end of his first state of the Republic address, President Remengesau signed the bill into law. Starting on October 1 this year, the minimum wage will increase from its current rate of $2.50 per hour to $2.75 per hour. An additional 25-cent increase will be added each year on October 1 until it reaches $3.50. The new minimum wage would apply to all employees except those employed as farmers by a single employer, domestic helpers, caretaker, babysitters or houseboys as well as student employees and non-governmental organization employees. Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. has signed the bill proposing to increase the minimum wage. At the end of his first state of the Republic address, President Remengesau signed the bill into law.
Starting on October 1 this year, the minimum wage will increase from its current rate of $2.50 per hour to $2.75 per hour. An additional 25-cent increase will be added each year on October 1 until it reaches $3.50.
The new minimum wage would apply to all employees except those employed as farmers by a single employer, domestic helpers, caretaker, babysitters or houseboys as well as student employees and non-governmental organization employees.
The bill also states that an employer paying the minimum wage would not be required to pay for employee's travel, food, housing or other living expenses.

A group of Uighurs freed from the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay have been flown to Palau, the island nation in the Pacific Ocean.
The move is part of the Obama administration's efforts to close the infamous prison.
However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the US.
For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknown land poses a major challenge.

The inhabitants of the island are still coming to grips with the extent of the threat. Every search uncovers more bombs: in the waters, caves and even people's backyards. Acid leaking out of the bombs poisons the water and the animals that people eat. As the race to remove the bombs becomes more hazardous, this report captures the dangerous task of cleaning up an old mess.

The tiny pacific nation of Palau has declared itself the worlds first national shark sanctuary. A large proportion of the 100 million sharks killed each year, are hunted in its territorial waters.
This carnage is being fuelled by Asias rapidly growing appetite for shark fin soup. The sharks are captured, have their fins hacked off and are then thrown overboard to die. If you are a guest of honour they give you a bowl of shark fin soup, says Johnson Toribiong, Palaus president, sometimes they catch sharks illegally, sometimes they catch tuna illegally. This tiny island has warned the world it will protect its natural resources, but with only one patrol boat, can the shark sanctuary ever be enforced? Shark activist Dermott Keane believes they cant do it alone; Palau needs assistance in enforcing this sanctuary.

“The ocean is very important—it is our culture, our way of life, our economy, and our self-sustaining source of what makes us Palauans,” says Palau President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. But the waters of the “Pearl of the Pacific” are changing and need our help. Erik Vereen, Fishing Tour Operator, Island Seed Ltd.: What makes Palau's oceans so attractive to tourists is that there's such a diversity of fish out there that it's very delicate and one of a kind.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr., President of Palau: You come to Palau and it's guaranteed that any snorkeler and any scuba diver will be able to see a shark, and that's the value of conservation.
The ocean is very important for Palau, because really it is our culture, our way of life—it is our economy. It's our self-sustaining source of why we're Palauans.
Ann Singeo, conservationist, Ebiil Society, Inc.: There's a huge offshore fishery that the current fishermen participate in. My husband is one of those people. So he sells it to the hotels. He sells it to the restaurants. We eat it at home. But there's less and less of the fish available in those areas where they're doing offshore fishing. And eventually, if we don't do anything about it, it doesn't get any better—it gets worse.
Erik Vereen: I used to dive ten years ago, and I've noticed a decline in all the fish that we see. But with this marine sanctuary coming—if it is created—our dive sites will be the best in the world.
Yimnang Golbuu, Ph.D., CEO, Palau International Coral Reef Center: We can always argue that we still have a lot, but we have to take action, and we have to take action now, while there are still fish in the water. If you wait until there're no fish, nothing we can do will matter anyway.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr.: I remember my father whacking me across the head with a bamboo pole, because I had caught too much fish. His message to me that day was that, Son, we never should take more than what we need. Think about tomorrow. Don't think just about today.
That's an ocean lesson that I hope everyone will take to heart these days, because we really need to do something serious about the ocean. Life cannot go at the same pace or at the same rate of harvesting the ocean's resources without doing something to regenerate, to repopulate, to rebalance what nature has to offer us.
So the next best thing for us to do is to ensure that at least our children, when they grow up, they'll get a taste of what it is to be an island fisherman, to be content on the ocean.

Chief Negotiator Billy Kuartei, who also served as the President's Chief of State in his first two terms as President and liaison officer between Palau and the U.S. Peace Corps among other official posts, has "developed significant leadership and diplomacy skills that will serve him well as State Minister", said Remengesau.
While serving as the Chief Negotiator, Kuartei has led the Republic in the bi-annual Joint Committee Meeting with the U.S. as well as playing a key role in the upcoming Micronesian Presidents Summit, which in some ways, he has already assumed some responsibilities of the State Minister.The President says that he can't think anyone else better to represent Palau's interests abroad than a man with such impeccable integrity and experience.
He hopes that the Senate will promptly consider Kuartei's appointment.
With the appointment of the State Minister, the only Ministry that remains without a nominee is the Ministry of Education.

this was when i was on a united airlines flight to palau however i actually had a premium economy class ticket and i was upgraded so i was excited to try it out however the seat that i sat at was a rear facing seat so i didn't have to turn my camera around to show you the wingview other than that i enjoyed a pretty good flight on the 747 food review-- i thought was sushi was good however i dont think it came with a side, the bannah split was not bad i did enjoy the ice cream in the split seat review-- i thought the seat was pretty comfortable the features on board were pretty nice unfortunatey the ife screens did not work in the business class which was a bit disappointing but other than that the flight was pretty good

this was when i was on a united airlines flight to palau however i actually had a premium economy class ticket and i was upgraded so i was excited to try it out however the seat that i sat at was a rear facing seat so i didn't have to turn my camera around to show you the wingview other than that i enjoyed a pretty good flight on the 747
food review-- i thought was sushi was good however i dont think it came with a side, the bannah split was not bad i did enjoy the ice cream in the split
seat review-- i thought the seat was pretty comfortable the features on board were pretty nice unfortunatey the ife screens did not work in the business class which was a bit disappointing but other than that the flight was pretty good

But, when LONELY PLANET, undoubtedly the best travel guide in the world, releases their yearly travel recommendations ‘Best In Travel 2016’, you can start booking your holidays without looking any further.
Best in Travel 2016 includes top 10 countries, top 10 cities and top 10 regions, with number one as the most ‘travelable’ place for the coming year.
For 2016, the number one place was honored to Botswana (Country, South Africa), Kotor (City, Montenegro) and Transylvania (Region, Romania).
Let me tell you the best things about this year's Best Countries as well as what my favorites are from the top ten list. Tomorrow, I will share with you the Best Cities and Thursday - Best Regions! Stay Tuned!
BEST COUNTRY TO TRAVEL IN 2016:
LONELY PLANET: Botswana
If you are anything like me, you are dying to discover Africa but have no idea which one of the countries to go to. You want to do a safari, see what locals really live like and see a National Park without getting mugged? Well, looks like Botswana could be our best bet. It does not only have a safe and stable economy, it is also one giant nature reserve with movie-like safaris and breath-taking river deltas (world famous the Okavango Delta).
Best time to go: May to August
Price: Not too bad, with a lot of airlines offering a return ticket for under $1500 from LAX.
AGGIE IN HER SHOES: Palau
I lived in 3 out of top 10 countries and so I feel like a bad mother choosing a favorite out of her kids. Probably that is why my vote goes to Palau, a country consisting of 250 islands just North of Papa New Guinea. The more I learn of Palau, the more I become intrigued. Even tough much further than Bora Bora, the flights are considerably less expensive (from $1400 return from LAX as opposed to $2200 to the French Polynesian getaway) and the convenience of the US dollar as the national currency and English as the official language is yet another plus (it is a presidential republic in free association with the US). It seems like Hawaii might have some serious competition, especially among savvy divers and snorkelers looking for a perfect dive in a place their friends have never even heard of! #theUltimateDestinationForTravelSnobs

New Public Health Program Offered At Palau College
By Rolynda Jonathan A new public health program called Community and Public Health (CPH) has been launched at the Palau Community College (PCC) to provide students opportunities for training and education in public health. Dr. G. Cuboni CHP Facilitator and Senior Public Health Advisor to the Ministry of Health says the program is similar to a program introduced in the Federated States of Micronesia in 2007. The program offers two degrees: the Associated of Science Degree in Public Health/Emergency Health Management and the Associated of Science Degree in Public Health. Dr. Cuboni explained that the program offers career development and advancement opportunities for existing health workers as well as for high school graduates who wish to enter the health field. Palau's new Minister of Health takes oath of office
By Rolynda Jonathan Palau President Tommy Remengau's third cabinet member confirmed by the Senate has officially sworn in to office. Greg Ngirmang took his oath of office on March 12 to serve as the new Minister of Health. Ngirmang, a former Social Security Administrator was earlier rejected and then deferred by the Senate before he was unanimously confirmed to the head the Health Ministry.

The Global Reef Expedition surveyed the reefs of Palau as part of their ongoing mission to study the health of coral reefs around the world. Palau's reefs are filled with schools of large fish and ancient corals, important indicators of reef health that are no longer found on many reefs in the South Pacific. Palau 2012 Members Hands Over Donation To The Hospital
On August 2, Palau 2012 forum officially handed over monetary donations to the Belau National Hospital in commemoration of their 2nd anniversary. Over $2,000 in monetary donation was presented to Minister of Health Greg Ngirmang in checks and cash, towards medicinal expenses. Minister Ngirmang expressed appreciation for the donation and assured the members that the donation would be deposited into a separate account for medicinal supplies. During the brief meeting, Minister Ngirmang took the opportunity to update the members on its renovation efforts as well as took the members around for a brief tour of the hospital. A new public health program called Community and Public Health (CPH) has been launched at the Palau Community College (PCC) to provide students opportunities for training and education in public health.
Dr. G. Cuboni CHP Facilitator and Senior Public Health Advisor to the Ministry of Health says the program is similar to a program introduced in the Federated States of Micronesia in 2007.
The program offers two degrees: the Associated of Science Degree in Public Health/Emergency Health Management and the Associated of Science Degree in Public Health.
Dr. Cuboni explained that the program offers career development and advancement opportunities for existing health workers as well as for high school graduates who wish to enter the health field.
Classes will begin at PCC this upcoming fall semester.

Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia. It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water. We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island...

This is a 30 minute, sound-synchronized movie I compiled and edited from over 40 gigs of movies and photos I shot in Palau during July-August, 2012. I stayed on the Ocean Hunter III (Fish n' Fins) with a crew of 7 and 6 other divers. All movies and photos were shot on a SeaLife 1400DC camera with strobe. The weather was primarily rainy or cloudy and it was not the classic Palaun visibility that most see (best to go during November through March). Still was awesome! I hope you enjoy it. Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia.
It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water.
We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting ground for hundreds and hundreds of birds squawking day and nite. The rangers tape off the area at the beginning of laying, but later, visitors can walk the length of the island and marvel in the sheer numbers and the beauty of their graceful flight.
During our visit, the Rangers, Louis, Jamos and Matthew, showed us a number of their duties for the Conservation area, and they took us to a number of important sites on the reef. Every day they check-in with the main office in Palau, and file a report. We were able to scuba dive at 3 sites, and record some of the rich marine life of the reef. At the old Japanese cargo shipwreck, only anchors and a few shards of pottery are left, but the reef is pretty with several white-tip lagoon sharks cruising the dramatic drop-off. One dive in the inner lagoon on one of the branches of the pass had the most gigantic lettuce leaf coral formation we’d ever seen. The dive in the Pass was action-packed; we were spinning our necks in every direction, not knowing what to look at next! All the sharks, schools of jacks, rainbow runners, barracudas, the giant grouper, turtle, and the rare and beautiful manta ray, were all seen during one dive!
Visiting the Giant Clam farm was inspiring, we’ve visited other Giant Clam farms, but they are usually instituted after the population has been depleted; at Helen Reef, they are everywhere in every size and every incredible color, and we saw them all over the reef system, not just in the farm area. Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia.
It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water.
We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting ground for hundreds and hundreds of birds squawking day and nite. The rangers tape off the area at the beginning of laying, but later, visitors can walk the length of the island and marvel in the sheer numbers and the beauty of their graceful flight.
During our visit, the Rangers, Louis, Jamos and Matthew, showed us a number of their duties for the Conservation area, and they took us to a number of important sites on the reef. Every day they check-in with the main office in Palau, and file a report. This is a 30 minute, sound-synchronized movie I compiled and edited from over 40 gigs of movies and photos I shot in Palau during July-August, 2012. I stayed on the Ocean Hunter III (Fish n' Fins) with a crew of 7 and 6 other divers. All movies and photos were shot on a SeaLife 1400DC camera with strobe. Palau Road Trip
We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day! While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall! We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day!
While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall!
We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. Luckily we had a dry bag to protect our camera gear. All in all, it was quite an adventure!
