A young boy has died in hospital after he was struck by a car as he looked at Christmas lights near Brisbane.

The nine-year-old died from his injuries on Tuesday, police said.

He was taken to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital after he was hit while viewing the lights with his family on Sunday - Christmas night - at Springwood.

The forensic crash unit is investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Police say the 24-year-old man failed to negotiate a turn off Jardine Street and hit a parked car before striking the boy who was walking nearby.

The man was questioned by detectives but has been released pending further investigation, police said.

One witness described the scene as "carnage" after the car went through a hedge and hit a water tank before crashing into a house.
