This tutorial goes over bootstrapping a consul server as well as setting up an agent. I have preconfigured json config files for each different type of server. My repository also includes sample health checks as well as a sample service for apache. All the commands I run are listed in the README of my repo! Enjoy using consul it seriously rocks!

Terraform is a tool for building and safely iterating on infrastructure, while Consul provides service discovery, monitoring and orchestration. In this talk we discuss using Terraform and Consul together to build a Docker-based Service Oriented Architecture at scale. We use Consul to provide the runtime control plane for the datacenter, and Terraform is used to modify the underlying infrastructure to allow for elastic scalability.

Load balancing and routing traffic to a single application is easy, but sending traffic to a always-changing number of applications is quite a challenge. In the last year, Belly has migrated from a monolithic Rails app to a service-oriented architecture with over fifty applications.
In this session, we’ll talk about how to use Chef and Consul to dynamically configure NGINX to route and load balance traffic across applications. These applications can be deployed in a variety of ways, including Chef, Docker, and S3. Additionally, we’ll discuss the importance of service discovery and monitoring inter-service traffic in a service-oriented architecture.

Consul can be used to coordinate distributed services with dynamic IP addresses and/or port numbers.
With the consul service discovery daemon, it's easy to create a central service registry that you can query by DNS or an HTTP API to find the service you need(eg. a webserver finds its database servers).

Consul and Docker are fast becoming core primitives for orchestrating production systems. Docker for packaging and containerization of workloads; Consul makes it simple for services to register themselves and to discover other services via DNS or an HTTP API.
Registrator is the missing piece of glue - automatically registering Docker containers (specifically their host IP and accessible ports) with Consul when they are running; and automatically deregistering them if they stop.

Consul
Consul (abbrev. cos.; Latin plural consules) was the highest elected office of the appointive office under the Roman Empire. The title was also used in other city states and also revived in modern states, notably in the First French Republic. The relating adjective is consular, from the consularis.
Modern use of the term
In modern terminology, a Consul is a type of diplomat. The American Heritage Dictionary defines consul as "an official appointed by a government to reside in a foreign country and represent its interests there."
In most governments, the Consul is the head of the Consular Section of an embassy, and is responsible for all consular services such as immigrant and non-immigrant visas, passports, and citizen services for expatriates living or traveling in the host country.

This tutorial goes over bootstrapping a consul server as well as setting up an agent. I have preconfigured json config files for each different type of server. My repository also includes sample health checks as well as a sample service for apache. All the commands I run are listed in the README of my repo! Enjoy using consul it seriously rocks!
