A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.
Greenwood Lake is an interstate lake approximately seven miles (12 km) long, straddling the border of New York and New Jersey. It is located in Greenwood Lake, New York (in Orange County) and West Milford, New Jersey (in Passaic County).
The lake was originally called "Quampium" by the Munsee Native Americans who lived there. It was renamed "Long Pond" by Europeans, who settled the area in the 18th century for farming and ironmaking, and eventually came to be re-christened "Greenwood Lake."
It was dammed up ca. 1765 by Peter Hasenclever of The American Company to increase the size of the lake for water power used downstream at the Long Pond Ironworks. The original dam was located even with is today's Fox Island, with most of the lake extending north of the state line. In 1837, the lake was again dammed, but at the location of the current dam, this time by the Morris Canal & Banking Company to supply water to the Pompton Feeder of the Morris Canal. The enlarged lake now flooded the Succor Brook at the northern end, forming the East Arm, surrounded "Lime Ridge" to create Chapel Island, and flooded the extreme southern end, including parts of Belcher Creek.
Neelum Valley (also spelled Neelam Valley) (Urdu: وادیِ نیلم ) is a 144 km long bow-shaped thick forested region in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. It is named after the Neelam river, which flows through the length of the valley.
The valley is situated in the north-east of Muzaffarabad, running parallel to Kaghan Valley. The two valleys are only separated by snow-covered peaks, some over 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) above sea level.
The valley is connected from Muzaffarabad by Neelam road, which leads up to Kel. The road condition from Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam is very good and suitable for any kind of transport. From Keran to Kel road condition is not well and not suitable for low floor vehicles. In winters road onward Keran block due to heavy snowfall and it is very difficult to reach upper parts of the valley.
Vans serve is only Muzaffarabad to Athmuqam after every 30 minutes. Buses run daily between Muzaffarabad and Kel in good weather. Jeeps and horses are available to reach remote areas of the valley.
To help protect or improve the quality of water resources throughout the U.S. is just one of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s missions. One of our Nation’s Great Lakes has been in trouble for years, and USDA efforts to expand partnerships and conservation practices are helping. "Climate Change Impacts on Lake Erie and Stone Lab Efforts to Address the Problem" Dr Jeff Reutter The Ohio State University Stone Lab & Ohio Sea Grant May 15, 2014: Byrd Polar Research Center: Ohio State University "Understanding Climate Change Risks and Identifying Opportunities for Mitigation and Adaptation in Ohio"
Presented by Alan Steinman - Director of Grand Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute (MI) Excess nutrient runoff is negatively impacting aquatic ecosystems in the Great Lakes and throughout the world. Understanding these impacts and how to mitigate them have become, for better or worse, something of a growth industry in the environmental and ecological disciplines. In this talk, I will describe three coastal systems located in west Michigan that have been exposed to a history of environmental abuses. Excess nutrients, phosphorus in particular, have resulted in impaired ecological structure and function, including potentially toxic algal blooms. I will discuss the unique attributes of each system, the nature of the key stressor(s), our restoration approach, and how su...

Winnibigoshish Water Clarity Doubles due to Zebra Mussels. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Public Forum-Grand Rapids Mn-March 20th 2018. Zebra mussels double water clarity in Lake Winnibigoshish By John Myers on Mar 11,2018 Duluth News Tribune The first zebra mussel babies, called veligers, were confirmed in Lake Winnibigoshish in 2012. By 2016 the first adult mussels were spotted. By 2018 the invasive filter-feeders are everywhere in the lake, located west of Grand Rapids. "They've just exploded in number in just a couple years. It's amazing. They're on every smooth substrate down there," said Gerry Albert, Lake Winnibigoshish large-lakes fisheries specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. It's one of the fastest infestations of the thumbnail-size mussels fro...
See pond 1 year later (74 seconds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?edit=vd&v;=fF0ClpxRkWc This is the removal of the Sutton Place HOA (Garland Texas) pond dam on September 28, 2015. For those wondering why the dam was removed. The Board for the HOA decided to have it removed and I am not on the board. But here is what I understand was the situation (may not be totally accurate). The pond is essentially a settling pond for a large portion of the streets of northern Garland. It is feed by 2 storm-water culverts feeding in storm water from the west. Over the nearly 40 years of its life, it has silted up and is now so shallow, that it weed up and look terrible most of the year (spring thru fall). The large rain this spring actually washed a large amount of gravel and rocks (probably c...
If we travel from Phnom Penh city to National Road No.2 then continue on National Road No.21 to Saang district at Kandal Province. It's just 25Km. south of Phnom Penh city, there's a small path on the right just one block after Saang Market and one block before Hun Sen Saang High School and Saang District office, there's a small path on the right heading to Saang Phnom Tourism Site, the entrance is at a small local market and Saang Pagoda's gate. I drive my motorcycle there and took about 50min to get there. It's a beautiful mountain with small temples on the top where people like to get up there and relax for fresh-air. After relaxing on the mountain, people like to walk around the street food market to get what they like to eat as they have fry snails, fried crabs, grilled chicken, grill...
Understanding how climate change will affect ecological processes is essential to protecting Great Lakes water quality and ecosystem health. Impacts such as warming temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, decreased ice coverage, and alterations to water levels are being observed across the basin, in some cases exacerbating existing ecological stressors. This session will share findings from the first State of Climate Change Impacts Report for the Great lakes basin, as well as information on efforts to better understand and predict the impacts of climate change.

The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016. France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1...
