The University of Delhi informally known as Delhi University is a public central collegiate university, located in New Delhi, India. It is known for its high standards in teaching and research, as well as the eminent scholars that it attracts to its faculty.

History

University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly of British Indian Government. University was earlier decided to be named as Prince Charles University. But then, Rai Kedarnath, the counsellor of then Chief Commissioner of Delhi and founder of Ramjas College, explained to the Education Minister that naming the university so might have catastrophic effects, as there was no guarantee of the university succeeding in the future, and failure would certainly antagonise the Prince and he suggested the name by which it is known today.

In the beginning, only three colleges existed in Delhi at the time: St. Stephen's College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College founded in 1917, which were subsequently affiliated to it. The university thus had modest beginnings with only three colleges, two faculties i.e. Arts and Science and about 750 students.

Delhi

Delhi (/ˈdɛli/, Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪ɪlliː] Dilli), officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. Delhi is historically and culturally connected to both the Upper Doab of the Yamuna-Ganges river system and the Punjab region. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. It is the largest city in India in terms of geographical area - about 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi). It has a population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India and 3^rd largest urban area in the world. Such is the nature of urban expansion in Delhi that its growth has expanded beyond the NCT to incorporate towns in neighbouring states and at its largest extent can count a population of about 25 million residents as of 2014.

Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.

Students' union

A students' union, student government, free student union, student senate, students' association, guild of students or government of student body is a student organization present in many colleges, universities, and high schools. In higher education, the students' union is often accorded its own building on the campus, dedicated to social, organizational activities, representation and academic support of the membership.

In the United States, student union many times only refers to a physical building owned by the university with the purpose to provide services for students without a governing body also referred to as a student activity center, although the Association of College Unions International (largely US-based) has hundreds of campus organizational members). Outside the US, student union and students' union refer to a representative body, as distinct from a student activity centre.

Purpose

Depending on the country: the purpose, assembly, method and implementation of the group might vary. Universally the purpose of students' union or student government is to represent fellow students in some fashion.

Delhi University Students' Union

The Delhi University Students Union, generally abbreviated as DUSU, is the umbrella Students' union at the University of Delhi.

DUSU is the representative body of students from most Delhi University Colleges and Faculties. Each college also has its own Students' union to which elections are held every year. Student elections are keenly contested. Several of the office bearers of DUSU have gone on to hold public office at the State and Centre level.

DUSU elections are considered the most high profile student union elections in the country as they provide an opportunity to enter directly into local and national politics. Arun Jaitely, current finance minister, was a member of DUSU. The University of Delhi has a long history of student political activity. Since 1954 in DUSU elections, there are caste based politics taking place especially by ABVP and NSUI which field mostly Jat or Gujjar candidates for important posts in DUSU.
