I lived in Portland, Oregon from 2009-2013 and would follow the journeys of OR7 whenever they were published in the local news. Everything about Journey/OR7 was amazing, and it's nice to have a documented history in Beckie Elgin's book. She has said this book is geared towards a younger audience, but as a wolf advocate and an adult, I love this book and recommend it to anyone passionate about wolves as I am, especially people in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), as this story should hit home to any of us in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho. Our wild wolves are all connected between those 4 states and Yellowstone. To know that OR7 has started his own Rogue Pack and they are thriving based on what he's had to go through is a testament to the perseverance and durability of wolves. Anything dealing with Oregon/PNW and wolves is something I purchase without a second thought. That's how I came across this book without ever knowing it was released yet. Also, a portion of the proceeds from your purchase of this book gets donated to a non-profit called Oregon Wild, which is an organization that does more for wolf advocacy in Oregon than just about any other that I am aware of. It's a win-win situation for both humans and wolves alike!

This is a fantastic book about the popular wolf, OR7 that captured public attention as it made his remarkable journey. This wonderful wildlife success story is full of complexity that Beckie Elgin enfolds from many points of view. She weaves the facts and information to help readers understand how and why the wolf has come to symbolize all that is wild. The embedded fictional tale provides the additional perspective from the point of view of the wolf himself, helping readers glimpse the world from the senses of a young wolf making his way into history. Excellent book for teaching about the interconnections of the environment including the role of humans. Very informative read for middle school through adult! A must have for California and Oregon libraries and schools.

This book is beautiful visually and tells a fascinating story about the adventurous wolf, OR-7. It says it is written for middle grade children, but I found it highly readible as an adult. It is very factual, but also written from the wolf's point of view which makes it as interesting a tale as reading a novel. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late into the night to finish it. I found the idea of certain wolves "dispersing" from the security of their pack to find a mate and start their own pack in a new location very interesting. My own far distant past relatives "dispersed" on the Mayflower in search of a new world. Hmmm ... Perhaps we have more in common with wolves and other wildlife than we think!
