George Michael's death on Christmas Day proves 2016 is not done yet in felling the ranks of some of the world's most beloved celebrities.
The year began with the death of David Bowie on January 10, closely followed by the passing of Alan Rickman four days later.
Since then, the casualties have included prominent actors, writers, performers and athletes, including Prince, Muhammad Ali and Leonard Cohen.
With just five days left in the year, many thought the worst had passed.
Then, when George Michael's publicist announced the 53-year-old had died, there was a common refrain: "2016 has taken another legend".
Is this year over yet? Too many people are passing away. Rest In Peace, George Michael. ☹️
