Coober Pedy is an ideal base from which to explore the fascinating Outback of South Australia.

Vast desert landscapes looking more like Mars than planet Earth, a variety of wildlife from bounding roos to clouds of noisy parrots... plus immense clear blue skies, multi-coloured sunsets and a nightime wonder of stars.

Places out of the pages of Australian pioneer history can be found, where words like ''big'' and ''remote'' lose meaning. Like Anna Creek, the world's largest cattle station – covering 24,000 square kilometres. Or The Breakaways Reserve with panoramic views and the Painted Desert which displays the remains of an ancient inland sea in breathtaking colours.

Plan your Adventure! The maps prevent you from missing a thing!

The opal capital of the world

Around 150 million years ago, Coober Pedy was covered by ocean - and when the water receded, the sandy silica minerals from the seabed flowed into the rocky cracks and cavities and solidified over time into multi-coloured gem-stone - opal. Explore the opal capital!
