A railroad tie/railway tie/crosstie (North America), or railway sleeper (UK and Australasia) is a rectangular support for the rails in railroad tracks. Generally laid perpendicular to the rails, ties transfer loads to the track ballast and subgrade, hold the rails upright and keep them spaced to the correct gauge.
Railroad ties were traditionally made of wood, but pre-stressed concrete is now widely used, especially in Europe and Asia. Steel ties are common on secondary lines in the UK; plastic composite ties are also employed, although far less than wood or concrete. As of January 2008, the approximate market share in North America for traditional and wood ties was 91.5%, the remainder being concrete, steel, azobé (red ironwood) and plastic composite.
Coarse aggregate is the standard material for track ballast, which provides drainage and resilience. On lines with lower speeds and axle-weights, sand, gravel and even coal ash from the fires of steam locomotives have been used.
Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles running on rails.
It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails, installed on ties (sleepers) and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface.
Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electric power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport system when compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilization and energy efficiency, but is often less flexible and more capital-intensive than highway transport is, when lower traffic levels are considered.

Mike shows us how to cut a railroad tie using a circular saw and reciprocating saw to get clean cuts. He saws upwards at the end so that the tie doesn't pinch and bind the saw blade.
The T1 track gang descends upon the CE&D; sub replacing cross ties between Princeton and Vincennes, IN. This video shows the process involved in replacing the ties and getting the track back to running condition. These guys were GOOD! I was like a choreographed ballet on rails.

A railroad tie retaining wall can last up to 40 years in a dry climate, maybe only 15 in a wet one, depending how its treated. Stone retaining walls last forever - but they are a lot more expensive and difficult to construct. Tire retaining walls are also super durable, but require a lot of labor and dirt to be hauled.
I started a discussion on Facebook a few weeks ago about what would be the best tool to cut through a railroad tie. Because the chainsaw was about $50 to rent, not to mention replacing the chain, I decided to pick up a sawzall blade for a few dollars instead. What happens next will blow your mind!!!!!1!!!!11!!!!

They create uneven surfaces with large gaps between each railroad tie and can be difficult to walk on. i built some steps on a steep hill out of some railroad tie's that i purchased at lowes and made a flower bed beside them. i cut them in half with a chainsaw, drilled holes about a foot off each side, and hammerd approximently 3ft sticks of rebar threw threw them
