Beloved Israel "Iz" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'Ole sings his renowned medley of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World." Israel was among the most celebrated of Hawaiian performers with a kind and gentle spirit that is evident in his touching voice. He tragically died in 1997 of an heart attack at an early age (38) and has been sorely missed by his many adoring fans.
According to Wikipedia: "The Hawaii State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be awarded this honor, and the only one who was not a government official. Approximately ten thousand people attended the funeral."

ENG ► Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole (Oahu, 20 May 1959 - Honolulu, 26 June 1997) was an American singer and musician native of Hawaii. It is also known by the pseudonyms Bruddah Iz, or Bradda IZ, or simply IZ.
■ He became famous in 1993 with the release of the record 'Facing Future' containing the medley of the songs 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (which was written in 1939 by Harold Arlen with lyrics by EY Harburg, played by Judy Garland and inserted in the column score for the film 'The Wizard of Oz') and 'What a Wonderful World' (standard brought to success by Louis Armstrong) executed in a version with just the ukulele accompaniment, played by the same Kamakawiwo'ole.
This song was included on the soundtracks of several films.
In the latter part of his life Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole has suffered from a severe form of obesity, coming to weigh 340 kg being tall 188 cm., which was even more out the contrast between the size of his body and the tiny ukulele played by him.
He died from respiratory problems 26 June 1997 at the age of 38 years. The whole day was shown the Hawaiian flag at half mast. His body was exposed to the Capitol Building in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him.
■ His ashes - as you can see in the video - were scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach.
Iz was nicknamed 'The Good Giant' by his admirers. It is also remembered for being one of the last full-blooded Hawaiians: always smiling and optimistic about him was particularly appreciated the love he felt for his land and his people.

Over the Rainbow
"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a ballad, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. It was written for the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, and was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland's signature song, as well as one of the most enduring standards of the 20th century.
About five minutes into the film, Dorothy sings the song after failing to get her aunt and uncle to listen to her relate an unpleasant incident involving her dog, Toto, and the town spinster, Miss Gulch. Dorothy's Aunt Em tells her to "find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble." This prompts Dorothy to walk off by herself, musing to Toto, "'Some place where there isn't any trouble.' Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat, or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain..." at which point she begins singing.

Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole (Hawaiian pronunciation: [kəˌmɐkəˌvivoˈʔole]) translation: "The Fearless Eyed"; May 20, 1959 – June 26, 1997), also called Bruddah Iz (Brother Iz), was a Hawaiian musician, entertainer and sovereignty activist.
His voice became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993. His medley of "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and television commercials.
Through his skillful ukulele playing and incorporation of other genres, such as jazz and reggae, Kamakawiwoʻole remains a very strong influence on Hawaiian music.
Early life
Kamakawiwoʻole was born at Kuakini Hospital in Honolulu to Henry "Hank" Kaleialoha Naniwa Kamakawiwoʻole, Jr. and Evangeline "Angie" Leinani Kamakawiwoʻole. The notable Hawaiian musician Moe Keale was his uncle and a major musical influence. He was raised in the community of Kaimuki, where his parents had met and married. He began playing music with his older brother Skippy and cousin Allen Thornton at the age of 11, being exposed to the music of Hawaiian entertainers of the time such as Peter Moon, Palani Vaughn and Don Ho, who frequented the establishment where Kamakawiwoʻole's parents worked. Hawaiian musician Del Beazley spoke of the first time he heard Israel play, when, while playing for a graduation party, the whole room fell silent on hearing him. Israel continued his path as his brother Skippy entered the Army in 1971 and cousin Allen parted ways in 1976 for the mainland.

The Rainbow
The Rainbow is a 1915 novel by British author D. H. Lawrence. It follows three generations of the Brangwen family living in Nottinghamshire, particularly focusing on the individual's struggle to growth and fulfilment within the confining strictures of English social life.
Plot
The Rainbow tells the story of three generations of the Brangwen family, a dynasty of farmers and craftsmen who live in the east Midlands of England, on the borders of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The book spans a period of roughly 65 years from the 1840s to 1905, and shows how the love relationships of the Brangwens change against the backdrop of the increasing industrialisation of Britain. The first central character, Tom Brangwen, is a farmer whose experience of the world does not stretch beyond these two counties; while the last, Ursula, his granddaughter, studies at University and becomes a teacher in the progressively urbanised, capitalist and industrial world that would become our modern experience.

Judy Garland
Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969), born Frances Ethel Gumm, was an American singer, actress, and vaudevillian. She was renowned for her contralto vocals and attained international stardom which continued throughout a career that spanned more than 40 years as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on concert stages. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award and won a Golden Globe Award as well as a Special Tony Award. She was the first woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year.
Garland was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the remake of A Star Is Born and for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg. She remains the youngest recipient (at 39 years of age) of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in the motion picture industry.
After appearing in vaudeville with her two older sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There, she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and 1939's The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, she was released from the studio and then gained new success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a return to acting, beginning with critically acclaimed performances.

It is also known by the pseudonyms Bruddah Iz, or Bradda IZ, or simply IZ. ■ He became famous in 1993 with the release of the record 'Facing Future' containing the medley of the songs 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (which was written in 1939 by Harold Arlen with lyrics by EY Harburg, played by Judy Garland and inserted in the column score for the film 'The Wizard of Oz') and 'What a Wonderful World' (standard brought to success by Louis Armstrong) executed in a version with just the ukulele accompaniment, played by the same Kamakawiwo'ole. This song was included on the soundtracks of several films. In the latter part of his life Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole has suffered from a severe form of obesity, coming to weigh 340 kg being tall 188 cm., which was even more out the contrast between the size of his body and the tiny ukulele played by him. He died from respiratory problems 26 June 1997 at the age of 38 years. The whole day was shown the Hawaiian flag at half mast. His body was exposed to the Capitol Building in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him. ■ His ashes - as you can see in the video - were scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach. Iz was nicknamed 'The Good Giant' by his admirers. ■ He became famous in 1993 with the release of the record 'Facing Future' containing the medley of the songs 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (which was written in 1939 by Harold Arlen with lyrics by EY Harburg, played by Judy Garland and inserted in the column score for the film 'The Wizard of Oz') and 'What a Wonderful World' (standard brought to success by Louis Armstrong) executed in a version with just the ukulele accompaniment, played by the same Kamakawiwo'ole.
This song was included on the soundtracks of several films.
In the latter part of his life Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole has suffered from a severe form of obesity, coming to weigh 340 kg being tall 188 cm., which was even more out the contrast between the size of his body and the tiny ukulele played by him.
He died from respiratory problems 26 June 1997 at the age of 38 years. The whole day was shown the Hawaiian flag at half mast. His body was exposed to the Capitol Building in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him.
■ His ashes - as you can see in the video - were scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach.
Iz was nicknamed 'The Good Giant' by his admirers. It is also remembered for being one of the last full-blooded Hawaiians: always smiling and optimistic about him was particularly appreciated the love he felt for his land and his people.
