John Lewis (Archbishop of Ontario)

John Travers Lewis (June 20, 1825 – May 6, 1901) was a Church of England clergyman, archbishop, and author. He was the Archbishop of Ontario, third Metropolitan of (Eastern) Canada, and the first Bishop of Ontario (Kingston).

Born in Garrycloyne Castle, near Cork (Republic of Ireland), the eldest son of the Reverend John Lewis and Rebecca Olivia Lawless, Lewis studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He was made a Deacon in 1848 and a priest in 1849. He served as priest at Newtownbutler in County Fermanagh, before emigrating to Canada in 1849 to be with his mother who emigrated the year earlier. He was posted to Hawkesbury and later in 1854 to Brockville. In 1861, he was appointed the first Bishop of Ontario (Kingston). In 1893, he became metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Canada and then Archbishop of Ontario. He resigned in 1900.

Family

John Travers Lewis married Annie Henrietta Marguerite, daughter of Henry Sherwood, at one time Attorney-General for Upper Canada. Their son, Travers Lewis, was a barrister in Ottawa. Their eldest daughter, Charlotte Sherwood Lewis, was born at Brockville, Ontario, and educated at Toronto, Ontario. She married Robert Craigie Hamilton, son of Col. George Hamilton of Hawkesbury, Ont., at Ottawa, Ontario on April 28, 1875. Their eldest daughter (born in Montreal) married Wilfrid Sergeant. Their son served as a midshipman and Captain's A.D.C. on H.M.S. Irresistible.

John Lewis (Georgia politician)

John Robert Lewis (born February 21, 1940) is an American politician and civil rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, serving since 1987, and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. The district includes the northern three-quarters of Atlanta.

Lewis is the only living "Big Six" leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, having been the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis is a member of the Democratic leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives and has served as a Chief Deputy Whip since 1991 and Senior Chief Deputy Whip since 2003. As Senior Chief Deputy Whip he has led other Chief Deputy Whips and serves as the primary assistant to the Democratic Whip.

John Lewis (born 15 October 1955 in Tredegar) is a former Welsh football player.

Career

Lewis was spotted by Cardiff City while playing for Pontllanfraith in a Welsh league match and was quickly offered a contract by then manager Jimmy Andrews. He made his Cardiff debut against Blackburn Rovers in September 1978. He went on to become a regular fixture in the Bluebirds line-up over the next few years before eventually leaving the club along with Linden Jones and Tarki Micallef to join Newport County in a swap deal that saw Nigel Vaughan and Karl Elsey go the other way and join Cardiff.

After establishing himself in the County side he went on to become the club's player-manager when Jimmy Mullen left for Aberdeen in 1987 but could not prevent the club being relegated in the 1986/87 season and was subsequently sacked after Newport took only one point from their first six games in the following season. He moved on to spend one season at Swansea City making 25 appearances before moving to Hereford before retiring.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.

Lewis (baseball)

Lewis (First name unknown) was a Major League Baseball player who played in 1890 with the Buffalo Bisons of the Players' League.

Lewis made his major league debut on July 12, 1890, as the starting pitcher for the Bisons in a game against the Brooklyn Ward's Wonders. Lewis gave up six runs in the first inning, six in the second, and eight in the third. After three innings, with Brooklyn leading, 20-4, Buffalo's manager Jack Rowe moved Lewis to left field, and called on left fielder Ed Beecher to pitch the final six innings. In Lewis's three innings as a pitcher, he gave up 20 earned runs, 13 hits, and seven bases on balls. He also collected one hit in five at bats. Brooklyn won the game by a score of 28-16.

According to author Norman L. Macht, the Bisons had been having problems with various pitchers and arrived in Brooklyn on the 12th, "when a local boy, whose last name was Lewis but whose first name remains mercifully unknown" told manager Jack Rowe that he was a pitcher and asked for a tryout. Rowe started Lewis and kept him in the game for three innings, before pulling him in favor of Beecher, who gave up eight more runs. Neither Lewis nor Beecher pitched in another major league game.
