The yip-howl of the coywolves in the Eastern Townships.
The yip-howl sound of the coywolves can send shivers down your spine. In the first 20 seconds you can see a very healthy male. It then disappears and at 0:45, with its companion, begin to yip-howl....When you lay down in your bed at night....it can be frightening.

Coywolf, Wolf-Coyote mix
A likely Wolf-Coyote hybrid in my yard, runs on gas and electric. Took several attempts to get footage on my wild life cam. I started seeing very large foot prints in the snow that were too large for coyote, and more like the size of a mastiff print - only there are no large dogs near my home. Look these guys up online, they are becoming an actual breed and are getting quite common in New England.

"Coywolf" is an informal term for a canid hybrid descended from coyotes and one of three other North American "Canis" species, the gray, eastern and red wolf. Coyotes are closely related to eastern and red wolves, having diverged 150,000–300,000 years ago and evolved side by side in North America, thus facilitating hybridization. In contrast, hybrids between coyotes and gray wolves, which are Eurasian in origin and diverged from coyotes 1–2 million years ago, are extremely rare. Such hybridization in the wild has only been confirmed in isolated gray wolf populations in the southern USA, while several specimens were produced in captivity via artificial insemination from sperm extracted from northwestern gray wolves introduced to female western coyotes.
Hybrids of any combination tend to be larger than coyotes, and show behaviors intermediate between coyotes and the other parent's species. In one captive hybrid experiment, six F 1 hybrid pups from a male northwestern gray wolf and a female coyote were measured shortly after birth with an average on their weights, total lengths, head lengths, body lengths, hind foot lengths, shoulder circumferences, and head circumferences compared with those on pure coyote pups at birth. The results found that, despite being delivered by a female coyote, the hybrid pups at birth were much larger and heavier than regular coyote pups born and measured around the same time. At six months of age, these hybrids were closely monitored at the Wildlife Science Center. Executive Director Peggy Callahan at the facility states that the howls of these hybrids are said to start off much like regular gray wolves with a deep strong vocalization, but changes partway into a coyote-like high pitched yipping.

Whats the deal? This is a capture from what my pet rooster saw on security cam, lol (also on youtube). In Ohio near WV. It got me wondering. I see these often and I just watched a PBS documentary that makes it sound like all eastern coyotes are coy wolves. It sure looks like one. I lived in AZ once and the western coyotes are much smaller. I'd guess 30 pounds. Here they look more like 50-60 pounds and are taller and thicker haired. They first came back into Ohio in the 70's and 80's and in the 90's they began enormous populations throughout the midwest. This would also fit the coy wolf story according to PBS. Eastern Coyotes are called Coy wolves. Is there a midwest or ohio coyote that is not a coy wolf? Whats the deal? Before the videos and other web sources I assumed they were just big coyotes and I thought coy wolves were not common and isolated to the northeast. In WV in the 90's the "mighty hunters" said they were all coy dogs and were hard to tell from dogs (but none had actually seen one yet, lol). Thats bull. I never saw one look like a dog, here or WV. I told them that but I was just a dumb city boy from Ohio of course. I saw a dead one in Licking County Ohio that was definitelly as big as a wolf and the crown of it's head was about the same as a large pitbull is. It was huge. That thing could have killed a human if it wanted. It would not seem far off if people around here said "there is the big kind and the small kind." It seems like that yet both kinds look like adults. The smaller ones might have more red I think and their red, buff, black and gray colors seem separated more. They probably change color through the season. Another of my videos one looks very solid blonde with reddish on the edges and it's a large one but the video makes it look smaller. I saw a very fat old looking one crossing the road. There were a lot of road kill deer in that short stretch of road. There is generally a lot of small animals here and road kill compared to other places and I think I used to assume they were just bigger because of that. WV people hunt deer in Ohio because they are bigger and they call them "corn fed" which they are. Could just be coyote have more to eat in the east than the west?
