Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. A Democrat as of 2015, Sanders had been the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, though his caucusing with the Democrats entitled him to committee assignments and at times gave Democrats a majority. Sanders has been the ranking minority member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015, and previously served for two years as chair of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Sanders was born and raised in the New York City borough of Brooklyn and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. While a student, he was an active civil rights protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. After settling in Vermont in 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns for governor and U.S. senator in the early to mid-1970s. As an independent, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, in 1981, and was reelected three times. In 1990, he was elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1991, Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected with 71% of the popular vote. During the 2016 presidential primaries, Sanders became the first self-described democratic socialist and first Jewish American to win a presidential primary of a major party, namely the New Hampshire primary.
On the biggest critics of Bernie Sanders during the Democratic Primary is now apologizing to him. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break down David Brock’s flip-flop. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://www.tytnetwork.com/go “Dear Senator Sanders: I’m with You in the Fight Ahead From the snow-filled days of door-knocking in New Hampshire, to November’s devastating result, the 2016 presidential election was hard-fought and heartbreaking. On the Democratic side, we had two leading candidates who each articulated a vision of an inclusive, prosperous, vibrant American democracy. On the other side, we had Donald Trump, the most corrupt and least qualified man ever to seek the presidency. It’s no secret who I supported. I was one of the most vis...
Bernie Sanders is holding Trump to his promises. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://www.tytnetwork.com/go “Sen. Bernie Sanders wants Democrats to know that the Republicans do not have a mandate to govern — and that they have a way of fighting. “Rachel, when people say ‘Ah, you know, I am giving up, I’m in despair,’ forget about that,” Sanders told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday night. “You have to fight back as people have throughout the history of this country. Our people have stood up and fought back. And the most important point as I said a moment ago, all of these issues, the majority of the people are with us. We have got to go out and reach out to people.” Sanders also pointed out that,...
The Democrats had a chance to vote for an amendment, proposed by Bernie Sanders, that would help Americans be able to afford medicines they need. They didn’t. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, tell you why thirteen Democrats voted against the amendment. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://www.tytnetwork.com/go “On Wednesday night, amid Senate votes for a bill that brought us one step closer to repealing the Affordable Care Act, a bipartisan group voted against an amendment to that bill proposed by Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar that could have paved the way for cheaper drugs to be imported from Canada. While a surprising number of Republicans (12) voted for the amendment, 13 Democrats voted against it. The amendment was rejected by a 46-52 ...

During a speech today on the Senate floor about health care, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pulled out a huge poster of one of President-elect Donald Trump’s old tweets to use as an example and call out the incoming POTUS on his campaign rhetoric. Highlighting a May 2015 tweet Trump sent where he claimed he was the only potential GOP presidential candidate against cuts in Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security, Sanders wanted Trump to stand up to Congressional Republicans and Paul Ryan or admit he was “lying” and just trying to get votes. I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. Huckabee copied me. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 7, 2015 The former Democratic presidential candidate also brought up Tru...

Host Chris Cuomo introduced the man, identified as Jim Jacobs from Pennsylvania, who immediately complained about Obama. “My question is this. I’m a business owner and we keep getting kicked in the teeth by this administration,” Jacobs asserted. “It’s regulation after regulation and ...
