The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

African Union peacekeeping troops from Chad have clashed with demonstrators in the Central African Republic, near the airport in the capital Bangui.
According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed.
The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked.
The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians.
Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels.
One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force.
The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside.
In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd.
In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country.

President Idriss Deby Itno of the Republic of Chad has congratulated President Jonathan for the statesmanship demonstrated during the General Elections.
The Chadian President made this known when he paid a solidarity visit to President Jonathan in the State House.
President Itno described President Jonathan as a true democrat who has allowed Peace to reign in Nigeria.
The Two leaders who had earlier held talks behind closed doors promised to continue to work together in the fight against Boko Haram.
President Deby said his visit ahead of the inauguration of the next administration was to have an overview of the joint efforts in dealing with insurgency in Nigeria.

Chad (
i/tʃæd/; Arabic: تشاد Tshād; French: Tchad), officially the Republic of Chad (Arabic: جمهورية تشاد Jumhūrīyat Tshād; French: République du Tchad), is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. It is the fifth largest country in Africa in terms of area.
Chad has several regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile Sudanian Savanna zone in the south. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second-largest in Africa. N'Djamena, the capital, is the largest city. Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Arabic and French are the official languages. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions.
Beginning in the 7th millennium BC, human populations moved into the Chadian basin in great numbers. By the end of the 1st millennium BC, a series of states and empires rose and fell in Chad's Sahelian strip, each focused on controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region. France conquered the territory by 1920 and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, Chad obtained independence under the leadership of François Tombalbaye. Resentment towards his policies in the Muslim north culminated in the eruption of a long-lasting civil war in 1965. In 1979, the rebels conquered the capital and put an end to the south's hegemony. However, the rebel commanders fought amongst themselves until Hissène Habré defeated his rivals. He was overthrown in 1990 by his general Idriss Déby. Since 2003, the Darfur crisis in Sudan has spilt over the border and destabilised the nation, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees living in and around camps in eastern Chad.

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

African Union peacekeeping troops from Chad have clashed with demonstrators in the Central African Republic, near the airport in the capital Bangui.
According to protesters, one person was killed but that has not been confirmed.
The medical charity Medecins sans Frontières said about 40 people were treated for injuries, most of whom had been slightly hurt in a stampede as people panicked.
The clashes are complicating international efforts to calm inter-religious violence in large landlocked state, where France has deployed 1,600 troops to protect civilians.
Despite French pleas for the crowd to disperse, many among the capital's majority Christian population accuse the troops from neighbouring Chad of siding with Muslim rebels.
One handwritten banner read "yes to France", "no" to the Chadian force.
The Muslims from Seleka took power in a coup in March, installing their own interim head of state. Chadian peacekeepers were accused of standing aside.
In the latest clash witnesses said they reacted to stones being thrown by firing into the air - and the crowd.
In other developments, the European Union has banned the export of arms to the Central African Republic and mercenaries from being sent to the country.

Since 2006, the state-owned petrochemical conglomerate CPC has been prospecting for oil in Africa, with four of its exploratory wells in the central African country of Chad having hit paydirt. But recent political instability in Chad coupled with the country’s severing of its diplomatic ties with Taiwan have significantly complicated CPC’s energy extraction efforts there. Located in the heart of Africa, the Republic of Chad is one of the world’s five poorest countries, and over 80 percent of its people are farmers and herders. With an inhospitable climate limiting the value of its annual agricultural production to under US$1.3 billion, Chad relies on the development of its oil resources to drive economic growth.Djerassem Le BemadjielMinister of Energy and Petroleum, ChadIt’s been a long time since oil fields were first found in Chad, but we only started to develop those resources in recent years. We drilled the first oil well in Chad before 1970, but it was only in 2003 that we first successfully extracted petroleum here.Chad’s estimated oil reserves stand at around 1.5 billion barrels using the US standard of measurement, and the country pumps out approximately 110,000 barrels of crude per day. An estimate based on these figures would put the lifespan of Chad’s petroleum reserves at around 36 years.Djerassem Le BemadjielMinister of Energy and Petroleum, ChadWe have grown from our first oil field to a current total of ten. Chad now hosts over 15 oil companies, and Taiwan’s CPC is one of the companies most active here. In 2005, with its diplomatic relationship with Chad hanging in the balance, the Taiwanese government sought to shore up bilateral ties by having state-owned CPC invest in oil exploration in Chad. In August of the same year, Chad broke off its relations with Taiwan. Despite the lack of official diplomatic ties, CPC continued to explore and develop Chad’s hydrocarbon resources under its existing contract, but increasing internal instability in Chad started to pose a greater threat to CPC’s exploration activities.Tang Hsiu-mingCPC Chad Branch General ManagerIn 2008, a rebel army entered Chad’s capital N''Djamena, where they surrounded the president’s compound. In Niger, the harvest has fallen by 26% as compared with the previous year, and some areas, especially the Diffa in the east of country and Tillabéry to the west, have had no harvest at all. Some 2 million people are threatened in Chad and a substantial number of people are expected to be affected in Mali in the coming months. Parts of Nigeria and Burkina Faso are also at risk.
In Niger, the harvest has fallen by 26% as compared with the previous year, and some areas, especially the Diffa in the east of country and Tillabéry to the west, have had no harvest at all. In Chad, harvests have fallen by 34%. The areas of Hadjer Lamis, Batha, Kanem, Guera regions and eastern Chad are expected to be hit hard, especially from June 2010. Overall, the harvest in the Sahel has decreased by 9% with great disparities between East and West Sahel.

The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. Sourdough bread, at its best, is one of the most satisfying things I can think of. When it’s made with a passion for the craft at home — as our family friend Tom makes it — it’s an art form of utter deliciousness.
It’s a relatively long process to make it at home, but with this video I’m attempting to give you a comprehensive look at the entire process, from beginning to end. This is not a typical, short QKatie video, but I decided to do a slightly longer video to actually help and inform those of you who want to try it!
As a newcomer to the sourdough process, it seems complicated — but I promise, once you give it a try step-by-step, you’ll see that it’s more simple that it appears at first glance.
A huge thanks to Tom, who is a literature professor by day but moonlights as the best bread baker in all of Ohio.
Below I’ve written out all of the steps for you so you can try this at home, while using the video as a visual reference for the various steps. Tom’s go-to resource is Chad Roberston’s “Tartine Bread” — which Tom highly recommends purchasing if you’re serious about getting into this.
HOW TO MAKE SOURDOUGH BREAD:
First, you need starter. This is a dough that already has those natural yeasts in it. It’s possible to make your own starter, but that’s a video in and of itself. If you know anyone who makes sourdough (a friend or a neighborhood restaurant), just ask them for some of their extra starter.
Next, make your Levain. 80 grams of white flour and 80 grams of whole wheat flour. Then add 160 grams of water. So equal parts your and water — Levain is a 50/50 mix. Add a generous tablespoon of starter and mix it in.
Let sit for 8 hours.
Measure 1050 grams of water and add it to a large container. Measure 300 grams of your Levain and add it to the water. Mix with your hands.
Measure 1350 grams of white bread flour (he uses King Arthur). This recipe calls for 150 grams of whole wheat flour. Mix gently with your hands until the flour is well incorporated with the Levain/water mixture. Let sit for 25-40 minutes.
Then add 30 grams of salt and an additional 75 grams of water. Get the water and salt mixed in with the dough, using your hands — which you’ve damped beforehand to prevent the dough from sticky to them.
He scrapes the dough away from the sides then begins stretching.
Stretch from 12 o’clock and pull it down to 6 o’clock (rotate a quarter and repeat, until you’ve stretched the dough 4 rotations), repeat for a total of 4 times every 30 minutes.
Then put onto a floured tabled and cut in half. He weighs each half to make sure they’re the same weight. Cover and keep in the fridge overnight.
The next morning take it out of the fridge about a half hour before you want to work with it. The dough will have some air bubbles in it, but don’t expect it to have risen double it’s size — that’s typical of other bread recipes, but not of sourdough.
Now you’ll cut that in half and weigh it to make sure both halves are even.
Get ready for the dough to be quite sticky here, which is why you want to cover your hands with flour, then gently shape each half into a circle/disk.
Put it on the counter in a warm, draft-free place and cover with a cloth. Let rest for 25 minutes. Then it’s time for bread baskets and final shaping.
Sprinkle flour over the bread baskets — 1 part rice flour and 1 part bread flour.
Flour your hands and stretch the dough. Stretch each 4 sides out then over, and then one final fifth time.
Add to the bread baskets you’ve prepared and place in the same draft-free spot it was in, and cover. Let rest for an hour to two hours — depending on temperature. It’s ideal if the area is 85 degrees. (Should be no less than 80 degrees, no warmer than 90 degrees).
Now Tom heats up his cast iron holders in the oven at 550 degrees, or as hot as your oven will go.
He adds some of the rice flour/white flour combo on top of the bread so his finger doesn’t stick when he does this test: he pokes the dough and if the indentation stays, it’s ready. If it bounces back, it’s not ready.
Then he adds a layer of the rice flour/white flour mixture on top.
Invert the dough onto a pie or tart pan’s circular bottom and he brushes off the excess flour with his handy invention of a razor blade on a coffee stirrer (you’ve gotta check out this part of the video, if you haven’t yet!)
He uses that same tool to create the design on top of the bread.
Turn the oven down to 450. Then he adds it to the cast iron pan and covers it.
Bake for 20 minutes. At that point you’ll want to remove the lids, and bake for another 20 minutes. Remove the beautiful bread you just baked, and let cool on a wire rack.
Then, ENJOY! You should pat yourself on the back — YOU DID IT!!! :)

Moissala, in the south of Chad, on the border with Central African Republic. From June to November, the number of cases of malaria increased five-fold. To diagnose and treat malaria cases as swiftly as possible, access to treatment needs to move beyond the hospital and into the villages. For those who live too far from a healthcare centre, the first contact will be the malaria village worker. Minh-Ly Pham, Médecins Sans Frontières Head of Mission (in French): "The malaria village workers are chosen by the community and then trained by Médecins Sans Frontières to screen patients for malaria, to give the first dose of treatment and to assess the severity of each case." In the south of Chad, in the province of Nya-Pende, there are long stretches of dirt roads before you reach the refugee camps. This region is now home to more than 30,000 refugees who fled the war in their homeland, the Central African Republic. Since 2002, they crossed the borders into southern Chad, desperate for security and shelter. In response to the crisis, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Department and the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, provided humanitarian aid to save lives. Three camps were built with the cooperation of the Chadian government. Ten years later, the EU's Development cooperation programme enables those who have settled in the camps some to plan a future.

Chad says it will withdraw its troops from an African Union peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic. The announcement is a setback for France, which has sent 2,000 troops to its former colony but is struggling to stem a wave of sectarian bloodletting that has driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

The conflict in Central African Republic receives far less media attention than Darfur, but the effects are much the same. In all, more than 50,000 refugees are sheltering in southern Chad. This influx has overwhelmed villages on the border. To maintain harmony, the UN refugee agency has initiated projects which help locals and refugees alike.

For many of the kids, soldiers live an ideal life; they have smart uniforms, dark glasses and usually a scooter or at least a bicycle. Nobody tells them what to do.
Many kids here want to be soldiers and until 2007, many kids here could become soldiers, joining any one of a myriad of armed groups. But following a cooperation agreement between UNICEF and the government in 2007, Chad has withdrawn over 800 children from groups involved in armed conflict. Those children have entered rehabilitation centers and receive vocational training in a bid to stop them rejoining for economic reasons.
At this UNICEF supported transit and orientation center for demobilized child soldiers in downtown N'Djamena, young boys deal with their experiences of war through art; images of guns and fighting dominate; it is all they know.
At the center, run by Care international, in addition to the art therapy, the boys are able to draw on 24 hour counseling to help them adjust to life outside the war zone. They often arrive with violent, aggressive tendencies and suffer sleep disorders, but with time social workers are able to gain their trust.
They are given literacy and language classes, receive three meals a day and receive health care as many arrive with injuries sustained while fighting. The surrounding community is also involved in the center's activities and is an important part of the reintegration process.
The use of child soldiers globally is widespread. Around 250,000 boys and girls under the age of 18 are currently involved in more than 30 conflicts worldwide. Some children are abducted or forcibly recruited, while others are driven to join by poverty, abuse, discrimination or revenge. In central Africa, thousands of children have been recruited by rebels and government forces in conflicts across Chad, Sudan, the Central African Republic and the DRC.
Demobilizing child soldiers is one thing, but ensuring they don't return to fighting for economic reasons, is something else. Ishmael visited a workshop, where demobilized and rehabilitated child soldiers learn to become mechanics. Throughout N'Djamena, workshops, tailors and even hotels are taking such boys under their wing, giving them a salary, independence and a better chance at a normal life.
Back at the center, images of war eventually give way to images of hope, Robert is training as a mechanic and instead of guns, he now sketches motorcycles, it's his way of leaving behind the past and looking to the future.

"Whenever I visit such centers, like the place I went today, there's always a bit of sadness. I feel like I can bring some assurance to some of the young kids there because I have been in a similar situation, I came to one of these centers very uncertain as to what the next stage of my life would be and where I am now so that they can understand that there are possibilities that lie ahead."

MaximsNewsNetwork: 28 June 2010 - UNICEF: N'Djamena, Chad - Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier and UNICEF Advocate for Children Affected by War, visits former child soldiers in Chad to support efforts to demobilize and rehabilitate them; prior to his visit, Chad, Central African Republic, Sudan, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon signed a declaration on ending the use of child soldiers.
In the dry dusty morning heat, barefoot kids in torn t-shirts run after an old deflated soccer ball.
They give the soldiers walking across their playground, a wide berth. This is N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, soldiers here are everywhere and in charge. For many of the kids, soldiers live an ideal life; they have smart uniforms, dark glasses and usually a scooter or at least a bicycle. Nobody tells them what to do.
Many kids here want to be soldiers and until 2007, many kids here could become soldiers, joining any one of a myriad of armed groups. But following a cooperation agreement between UNICEF and the government in 2007, Chad has withdrawn over 800 children from groups involved in armed conflict. Those children have entered rehabilitation centers and receive vocational training in a bid to stop them rejoining for economic reasons.
At this UNICEF supported transit and orientation center for demobilized child soldiers in downtown N'Djamena, young boys deal with their experiences of war through art; images of guns and fighting dominate; it is all they know.
At the center, run by Care international, in addition to the art therapy, the boys are able to draw on 24 hour counseling to help them adjust to life outside the war zone. They often arrive with violent, aggressive tendencies and suffer sleep disorders, but with time social workers are able to gain their trust.
They are given literacy and language classes, receive three meals a day and receive health care as many arrive with injuries sustained while fighting. The surrounding community is also involved in the center's activities and is an important part of the reintegration process.
The use of child soldiers globally is widespread. Around 250,000 boys and girls under the age of 18 are currently involved in more than 30 conflicts worldwide. Some children are abducted or forcibly recruited, while others are driven to join by poverty, abuse, discrimination or revenge. In central Africa, thousands of children have been recruited by rebels and government forces in conflicts across Chad, Sudan, the Central African Republic and the DRC.
Demobilizing child soldiers is one thing, but ensuring they don't return to fighting for economic reasons, is something else. Ishmael visited a workshop, where demobilized and rehabilitated child soldiers learn to become mechanics. Throughout N'Djamena, workshops, tailors and even hotels are taking such boys under their wing, giving them a salary, independence and a better chance at a normal life.
Back at the center, images of war eventually give way to images of hope, Robert is training as a mechanic and instead of guns, he now sketches motorcycles, it's his way of leaving behind the past and looking to the future.

"Whenever I visit such centers, like the place I went today, there's always a bit of sadness. I feel like I can bring some assurance to some of the young kids there because I have been in a similar situation, I came to one of these centers very uncertain as to what the next stage of my life would be and where I am now so that they can understand that there are possibilities that lie ahead."
